http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2906830/postsCould Texas once again become the Republic of Texas?
Without question, the Nov. 6 election will be a do-or-die, make-or-break, Rubicon-crossing event. If the presidential election goes one way, we get a do-over. Well be given the opportunity to take the first step on a long, arduous journey back to our political and economic roots. If it goes the other way, federalism and balance of power will continue to be edged out by an overreaching federal government and an imperial presidency. Socialism will have an unbreakable hold on the economy, and a centralized government, rather than a free market, will determine business winners and losers.

Don't hold that against me.
I was born and raised in California.
I would much prefer to live there instead of here.
Just can't make that happen.
My husband spent 40+ yrs paying into SS and Medicare. I think he deserves to collect, don't you?
treestar
(82,383 posts)which is silly, so it's hard to get into details - the US would probably have a generous immigration policy for Texans wanting back into the US.
If it actually happened and the US allowed it (that would have to be so) there would be some way to work it all out.

(82,383 posts)Since it would never happen. The Freeper vision is what we'd be attacking (note the Freepers think Texas is entirely conservative). And it sounds like a nice chunk of land to the Freepers. This is but an imaginary Freeper vision, and attacks on it would be attacks on that.

(47,675 posts)MFM lives in AZ, but the state acts like it wants to be a land-locked island of ignorance and hatred. I lived in NH for ten years (before Shaheen was elected governor) and some of the TOWNS wanted to become independent of the state. Why can't these people just get it through their thick skulls that we're only a strong country because we ARE a country?

(37,457 posts)My use of the word "listen" meant, this is only the extremist fringe talking.
If a huge majority of Texas voters ever seriously considered secession, then I would take them seriously.
Secession is illegal, would not succeed and would be doomed to failure in another bloody war.

(3,829 posts)If Texas is prevented from separating, then that freedom is taken. Nobody, whether it was a long time ago or now, has the right to sign away that freedom. But, I don't think most Texans are interested in separating. It would be a bad idea, and they would probably beg to return if they tried.
In principle, if the citizens of Texas decided that they wanted to go it alone and create their own country, what right does the rest of the country have to deny them? It's the government's job to work for the people. Governments don't own the people.
Well informed citizens SHOULD vote for whoever acts in their best interest as a whole. So it is legitimate for a government to take away some freedoms of some members of it's population if it is in the interest of the people as a whole. But, if the people of a particular region of the country decide that the US Government wasn't acting in their best interest, it is their natural right to separate.

When Texas entered the union, they made an agreement with all the citizens of the union, not just those in Texas. As such it's not just up to the citizens of Texas to dissolve that agreement.

(36,974 posts)Texas will NOT ever secede from the union because it is illegal for any U.S. state to secede.
The only thing that Texas can do legally is divide into four (or is it three or five) smaller states.
freshwest
(53,661 posts)I'm not sure it is illegal. VT passed the idea around during the Bush administration to quit supporting the war but I never heard Sanders speak of it, so you may be correct. There has always been loose talk of Texas secession for various wing nut reasons, but it will always be in the best interests of Texas to remain in the USA. The former map and division creating several American states is at this link. Unfortunately, the map image will not come through, sorry about that.

The secession to join the Confederacy was a disgrace and repudiated by most sane natives many years ago. Some of the slaveholders were also in opposition to Mexico before the Republic was established. Here is the history of Juneteenth as I was taught it in school and how the Union army arrived in Galveston:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juneteenth
I grew up in a Texas where there were graveyards of slaves and had small towns that were the property of freed slaves. It was an embarrassment to most people I knew that slavery had ever existed, much less been a factor in the governance of Texas.
The last group of criminal, extortionists seeking to re-establish the Republic of Texas with its own currency came to an ignominious end near Fort Davis. They tried to find legal flaws which wing nuts still cite to defend the assertion at Texas was not legally rejoined to the Union. They conveniently ignore the fact Texas threw in her lot with the Confederacy and lost when it did and had to suffer the consequences with them.
Some of this last bunch may have never been found, as I heard when the standoff ended, but am not willing to take the time to look it up for sure. I'm sure the coyotes had a good meal. Here's a link the Freepers likely visit. They are as ignorant as the rest of the Confederates:
http://www.rickross.com/groups/republic.html
At several times in history, Texas was more progressive than most of the South. The last decades of Republican rule have done little for the people of Texas. It is all their own ingenuity and strength of family and spirit that has preserved them.
In the meanwhile, the stupefying GOP rule is working on reducing the state to the social standards of a third world, patrician country. Texas is the experiment they heralded with Bush as a model for the rest of the nation. I'm sad to say it's worked in some respects. but there will always be opposition to them.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas#Republic
And that's my opinion.

Viper1's OP gems:
"Congratulations to the US Militia.
Recruitment to various US Militia groups
increased by 77,104 members in the last
12 months.
These new recruits will comprise of
a new 60 Battalions for immediate
domestic deployment within hrs of
notification.
This recruitment feat rivals any military
branch in the US.
Roughly 68% of them are former US Military
personnel with tactical training. Approximately
550 of them are former Special Operators who
will lead their men.
Enjoy your corporate fascism while it lasts"
The thread is several pages long, and details their "assassination" plans.

(18,186 posts)I don't think any of them have a true grasp on reality, but I think if SHTF they will do some damage before they are annihilated.
They actually believe they can assassinate all in our government and take over themselves. And the rest of us can "get out of the way or else."
Of course, once they are in place in their fantasy, they fail to mention that their current LOVE of the Constitution will be replaced by a desire to see every liberal, gay, minority and woman murdered, imprisoned or enslaved if they don't go along with WhitE Boyz World.
Their Post Militia World resembles a Blue Collar Afghanistan or Somalia, but as long as white guys win, who cares? They're selling anarchy, while pretending to sell us "Wholesome Colonial America 2.0."

(11,833 posts)And I think it's possible. Maybe not this election or next. But I think the republican brand is getting to be like contaminated dog food.
Nixon had a southern strategy to move the south away from the democratic party, toward the republican party. Reagan helped solidify it.
I think it's entirely possible that the majority of Texans can tilt back to the democratic party, once the majority are aware that the republicans aren't helping working people one bit. In fact they are harming them.
Thank you Texans here. I like your posts!
