They are now dealing with a 500 year hurricane/flood. After being led down the path that 'climate change' is not real by the Repugs and Trump - does anyone think that they might have some different thoughts about that now? Do you think they feel hoodwinked now?

(25,294 posts)I always ask when Trump or the Repugs do something to affect our country that is outrageous - how would they handle it if the shoe were on the other foot and it was the Dems doing the things that the Repugs and Trump do and get away with.
I'm amazed to see the comments here that are so negative to the Dems. We know that the Repugs and Trump capitalized on every move that Obama and the Dems made and found ways to blame the Dems/Obama or to make themselves look good.
It seems like we here at Democratic Underground and our Dem representatives are our own worst enemies. We let Trump and the Repugs get away with things. We make excuses for Trump and the Repugs and we never hold their feet to the fire. So what do you expect? Give them an inch and they take a mile.
The Repugs are also good at using the 'power of suggestion' to put thoughts in the minds of the American voters.
Why don't we Dems use the same tactics. I know the saying is "When they go low - we go high" but we are losing to the Repugs because we don't fight like they do.
I'm worried because we have a great opportunity in 2018 to take back the House and Senate. However, it appears that we are beat before we even start - because it looks like we always take a defeatist attitude about things.
If I'm the only one that feels this way - tell me - and I'll shut up.

(31,131 posts)that jobs or the economy was NOT the reason white people voted for him, making America white again is why they voted for him.
We know that, the data is there.
But if you are talking about that at most 2% of the voting public (which to your argument, 2% of the voting public is actually a large number, as opposed to 2% of the public) who can be swayed to stop voting against themselves, who do not hold racism higher than not starving on their table of importance, then yes.
I think that group exists and we can deal with that but NOT if we do it at the expense of allowing continued racism or misogyny.

(25,294 posts)and maybe we need to run the type of campaign that they do. You know - appeal to the one issue voter.
We should target groups (i.e., seniors, women; the sick; millenials (with student loans); LGBTQ's; Transgender's; etc) and point out to them how the Repugs actions effect these groups.
We can't afford to run a campaign again just against Trump. The Repugs gave us Trump. They enabled him from the very beginning and they are still circling the wagons for this joke of a president.
We need to run the 2018 campaign against the Repugs. There is certainly enough material to sink the Repugs and take back the House and Senate. If we're able to do that we can effectively then neuter Trump - if he is still president by 2018.
I don't think it is street fighting or fighting dirty to run such a campaign. And we can still do that without telling lies or resorting to criminal activities to win.
The Repugs have laid out our campaign for us for 2018 to take back Congress. Yet they are spreading the word that the Dems don't have a platform - that we don't know what the Dem Party stands for. We do know what we stand for. You said in your response.
Dems are better people and the Dems win for the country/for the People.
From some of the responses here on DU - I'm not sure that many Dems believe that. We have to start believing. We can do this. We can take back the House and Senate in 2018.

(16,890 posts)I'm not trying to be argumentative but, honestly, in this moment, I couldn't care less about who the people of Houston may or may not vote for. My sole concern is that we have members of our families, fellow DU'ers and we have fellow Americans who are stuck and facing circumstances that are unimaginable to most of us here. When any American struggles, I don't care about their political persuasion, my concern is for them as a human being. I think we should take a step back and remember that...there will be plenty of time for politics and changing minds after we have begun to dig out and recover from this storm.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)Docreed2003
(16,890 posts)But I think we can hold ourselves to a higher standard than the right. We can talk about changing minds after the storm has passed. Right now, if we want to show that we truly are on the side of the people in Houston, politics should play no role in that, unless it's fighting for the resources they need to recover from this catastrophe.

(62,444 posts)I can't for the life of me figure out the objection to discussing politics on a political forum.
Nothing anyone posts on DU means doodly-squat to anyone in need one way or the other. I've donated what I can and am not nearby with a boat, but I doubt anyone with no power who is holed up in their home or a shelter at the moment gives a rats ass what anyone is posting on a political discussion forum.
People are going to post about politics on a political discussion forum. That's the way it is.
And, oh yeah, the first words out of Gov. Abbott's mouth last night during one of his interviews was "Texans are the best!" So, notwithstanding my existence as a lesser creature for not being a Texan, maybe they'll accept whatever my donation affords.

(886 posts)People have until Friday to file insurance claims, otherwise it could cost them big.
This story was originally published by the Texas Tribune.
For many Texans ravaged by the rain and winds Hurricane Harvey carried ashore this past weekend, filing an insurance claim for the damage their property sustained is probably the farthest thing from their minds right now. But waiting to submit a claim past Friday could cost them big.
A new law set to take effect Friday aims to crack down on frivolous insurance lawsuits. But House Bill 1774 also reduces the penalty interest rate insurance companies face for late payments if the policyholder files a lawsuit.
If insurance companies are late in paying claims as a result of a lawsuit, they must pay an additional penalty to policyholders. Under current state law, that penalty comes in the form of a fee that totals 18 percent of the claim. For claims filed after Friday, that rate will be determined by a market-based formula that is capped at 20 percent. Currently, the rate would be 10 percent.
While people filing claims by Friday would benefit from the higher penalty payouts in lawsuits, those same cases would be subject to provisions in the new law. Those provisions would decrease the chances insurance companies will have to pay the plaintiffs attorneys fees in full and protect agents from being personally sued.

(38,021 posts)All four of our largest cities are blue. Texas is also a majority/minority state.
However, gerrymandering, voter suppression and the fact that vast numbers of voters live in rural areas mean that a blue Texas is a long way off.
I would take some stupendous fuckuppery to flip Texas from red to blue by 2020. Then again, if anyone can accomplish such fuckuppery, it's a guy like BLOTUS.
