ICE Left 50 Immigrant Women And Kids Stranded At A Bus Station Before Hurricane Harvey Struck

Federal immigration authorities left about 50 immigrant women and children, most of them asylum-seekers from Central America, stranded at a downtown San Antonio bus station after service was canceled Friday due to Hurricane Harvey.

Barbie Hurtado, a community organizer with RAICES, a nonprofit that provides legal aid to immigrant families, said Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett, who represents San Antonio, had called immigration enforcement officials the day before to tell them not to drop families off.

“Knowing that, they just dropped them off,” Hurtado said. “These are women and children who have been released from family detention with no money, cell phones, and don’t speak English.”

When BuzzFeed News asked about the decision to leave the women and children at the bus station, a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson issued the following statement on Sunday: "All of the aliens who were transferred to the San Antonio Greyhound bus station by ICE on Friday morning had confirmed tickets and itineraries to their destinations. Throughout the process, ICE remained in close contact with bus officials to ensure bus availability, and all aliens had confirmed bus transportation at the time at which ICE officers departed the station. Ultimately, ICE kept two additional families in custody since their bus trip had been cancelled."

The spokesperson declined to answer whether buses were running when the families were dropped off.

No, the only "aliens" are the ICE agents. They have to be completely alien and without a shred of humanity to just leave these people to their fates.

I looked up requirements for ICE agents. What I found interesting is that the ONLY language the ICE agents must train for is Spanish. Here is a quote from the requirements...Emphasis is placed on grammar concepts and the ability to perform an arrest of an
alien

"alien"? Wow.

So only Spanish speaking people are "aliens" or immigrants?

Just a few swear words, telling them to stop, get on the ground, shut up, and get on the bus. That's about all they need to know. And how much can they really learn in five weeks anyway?

This actually gets to the point. Mexicans are "alien", other, not people. Their purpose is to be rounded up as efficiently as possible. If ICE agents were able to communicate at a deeper level, they might catch on that the "aliens" are people. We certainly wouldn't want that!

11 million.

8 million or nearly that number are Spanish speaking. Those from Brazil, Guyana, and Belize probably aren't huge numbers. This doesn't count Dominicans, by the way.

The remaining 2.8 million include some English speakers from various countries (Britain, Ireland, Caribbean countries, Australia, RSA), but include everything from Kikuyu and Igbo to Thai and Tamil and Malay and Korean and Cantonese. While some of these will wind up living in specific communities, many are going to be spread around. Harder to catch. And given the difficulty of getting here, many of those will have some English in their backgrounds, or be here with somebody who does.

If you're going to pick one language for ICE to require because it's useful, it'll be Spanish, and probably cover 3/4 or so of those they apprehend and even more of those they interact with. It's the same kind of thinking I used when I was a kid and made a list of languages to learn: Spanish was at the top of the list, Portuguese and Russian were in the mix, but Romansch didn't make the cut. (And if you read this, you'll likely be thinking, "What the hell's Romansch?" It's one of the official languages of Switzerland but spoken by very few people. It'll be a boutique language in a generation or two and gone after that.)

Same for most teachers I know. They want to help with some of their ESL students, and if they're going to learn a language other than English it'll be useful: so they learn the more useful Spanish instead of the less useful Ukrainian or even Romansch. Unless they work in a school with a large Vietnamese population.

who tried to tell him about abusive treatment of detainees. I can't stand the man because of it, and DO. NOT. TRUST. HIM. I don't trust that he's not every bit the racist Trump is.

They know he is a racist and what they didn't want is for their racism to come out with such a vengeance. They all try to hide their racism. But Trump is letting it all out and they are not happy about it
