General Discussion

I live in an Atlanta suburb with a very large Mormon population. Most of the Mormon families have 5 + children, many of whom are very active in school & community sports. None of these families will participate in any games, meets, tournaments, etc. if they fall on a Sunday, often hurting their teams. This weekend is the county swim meet and none of the Mormon families on our team will participate in any of the events on Sunday, which resulted in the elimination of several of our team's top relays.
At the meet on Saturday another parent (that is a very conservative Christian) & I were discussing what that would mean if Romney was elected president. I was surprised that she thought this was a genuine concern. She said she was going to discuss it with some of our Mormon friends since we are not familiar with the basis of this principle and how far it extends. She was saying she was surprised the question has not come up in the election yet but we agreed nobody wants to drag religion into the race. It is probably most noticeable to us due to our kids heavy involvement in sports and the large Mormon population in our area.
The particular question that comes to mind is the Clinton campaign ad that said, "Who do you want answering the phone at 3am?" If Mitt answered the phone at 3am on a Sunday would he have to call them back on Monday since that would be considered working? What about Sunday State Dinners, meetings at Camp David, etc.
Again, not trying to religion bash but I am confused by this Sunday principle and how far it extends because of how it has personally effected us over the last several years.

(23,606 posts)To me this isn't a real issue. There are a gazillion reasons why President Obama is a better choice. Religion isn't one of them.

(28,394 posts)Would he work on the Sabbath? Who knows... and who cares? Neither of them will ever be president.
BTW, I heard on the news that the Romneys are at their lakeside "cottage" (mansion) this weekend.

(34 posts)The mormons in your community are honoring the Sabbath ie 10 Commandments, But as a mormon I can understand your frustration that this affects your children's athletic competitions. I am a Harry Reid FDR Democrat and still an "active mormon", we have a saying in "Mormondom", it's the "Ox in the Mire" principle. As a pragmatic people we know when honoring the Sabbath is the practical thing to do and when necessity arises we will work on Sunday. I'm sure that our first mormon president (Hopefully Harry Reid) will put the nation first, regardless the day of the week, trying to still honor the Sabbath when possible. I hope that we can have honest dialog about our differences. My mormon prayers are for President Obama and Brother Romney, but my vote is straight down the party line, just like my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and thousands of other Harry Reid FDR mormon democrats.
