When the national focus is on race, from whatever angle, many whites become more pro Republican. It causes many whites to "remember" that minorities are dangerous and leach off the government. That is why Bannon said that if Democrats focus on race then Trump with his nationalist economic story line will crush Democrats.

Nixon whipped up fear of minorities in his law and order campaign. Reagan talking about a "buck" getting welfare, talking about his fabricated Cadillac driving welfare queen sold the lie that lazy minorities suck up most government spending. These outrageous smears stick, like the Nazi claims that Jews drink the blood of Christian babies.

Trump is smart enough to know how successful Republicans have been in their Southern strategy. Many of us fail to understand the broad racism of many of us white people.
