There were no openings in her field so she studied up on MS Office and got good at it. I taught her SQL and gave her a book on SQL Server. She's not terrific at it, but she has the basics.

She applies for several jobs a week for Excel & SQL. The only response has been email saying "thanks for applying."

I think that the problem isn't so much that people don't have skills, willing to learn them, or willing to work for less. Companies seem to be advertising for positions but just won't hire people.

Also, she's 51. I don't know if that's a factor.
