one that takes into consideration who the person was and why it was put there. statues in cemeteries as opposed to in your face Jim Crow white supremacy "redeemers" invasion of public space. Having said that.
A. That probably isn;t going to happen.
B. The event was a Nazi rally and the statues are a Nazi red herring.

(2,522 posts)What if the US had put up statues of Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Butler, Sheridan, Chamberlain, and a host of others across the South to remind Southerners of who is really in control.
My understanding is that there is a grand total of one statue of Lincoln in the Deep South, and that is a relatively recent one at a small Louisiana college named after Lincoln.

(637 posts)Most of the battles were in the South but they don't honor the Union Soldiers who fought there. In fact they were mostly Jim Crow expressions of white supremacy. Gettysburg, one of the few Northern battles has monuments to the dead from both sides.
My point is the statue thing is yes, mostly racist bullshit but a lot of white and even black people son't realize it and need to be educated.
The atrocity is not the sudden realization there are a bunch of confederate statues of dubious origin but that the president of the united states used that to defend a nazi rally and said there were good folks there.

(11,686 posts)I say this because no matter what, they do represent our history no matter how dark and damning it may be. I think that there should be a museum put up where the statues can be put in where people can still go see and learn about our history. I think they should be kept indoors where they are not able to intimidate people and the only ones who see them are the ones who want to see them.

If this is truly the benchmark, then every Confederate statue should be torn down and melted.
1.) Confederate Generals and politicians were actual traitors fighting against the United States.
2.) Common soldiers, while probably not slave-holders themselves, are the same people who went home after the war and passed Black Codes and Jim Crow laws. No matter how they felt about the war, none of these people deserve a statue or any other honor, besides a grave marker.

(4,407 posts)Were Nazi statutes removed thoughtfully? I'm sorry if people's "heritage" includes the abomination of slavery, including my own. But the romancing of the Confederacy has served absolutely no one well.

the one known as Lucifer, Satan, whatever you need to call him.
