Missouri state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal speaks on the Senate floor in Jefferson City, Mo., in 2014. (Jeff Roberson/AP)
By Jim Suhr August 20 at 7:16 PM
KANSAS CITY, Mo. A Missouri lawmaker who drew bipartisan outrage over her brief Facebook comment expressing hope that President Trump would be assassinated apologized publicly Sunday to Trump and his family, calling the post a mistake.
But Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, a black Democrat, said she has no plans to resign as numerous top Republicans and Democrats in Missouri have insisted since Thursdays post in which she wrote, I hope Trump is assassinated! Gov. Eric Greitens and Lt. Gov. Mike Parson, both Republicans, said Friday that state senators should oust her.
I made a mistake, and Im owning up to it. And Im not ever going to make a mistake like that again. I have learned my lesson. My judge and my jury is my Lord, Jesus Christ, Chappelle-Nadal, who later deleted the post from her personal Facebook page, told reporters at a church in Ferguson.

(8,109 posts)Everyone's entitled to mistakes, but this was really beyond the pale.
...as much as I hate to say it, she really should resign her post because her comment went way too far.
Just my opinion...

(18,124 posts)"I could walk out on 5th ave and shoot someone", not one of his supporters or the confederacy supporters would care.......this so called boy who is the idiot-potus should resign along with his whole administration. There's a solution for you, not her resignation.

(1,622 posts)...two wrongs don't make a right. We should resist with all our collective might, but hoping for/calling for/advocating for the assassination of any POTUS is wrong and makes us no better than those who did the same thing when Obama was President.
Whatever happened to "when they go low, we go high?"
heaven05
(18,124 posts)still there........and while beating a man nearly to death, killing a counter-protester to the white hate is pretty low....you can stay high....war is not fought in the realms of heaven but conducted in the pits of hell....I'll go there if I have to....done it once, will do it again.....have a good day.
ADX
(1,622 posts)...and like you, I'll do it again when the time comes. That being said though, I still contend that no matter what, no legislator should say what this one did because any talk of assassination is wrong, plain and simple.
I don't understand why that's such a difficult concept to comprehend but either way, you're entitled to your opinion.

(18,124 posts)and thanks.....I am, as are you.

(18,124 posts)With all the insults to POC emanating from the WH and Breitbart now, again, THAT'S beyond the pale.
Especially with the class and distinction of the man who led this country for 8 years before this clown slithered his way into 1600.
The comments were Not stupid either. Trumps comments since entering 1600, now those HAVE been stupid, ignorant, racist, bigoted and just plain representations of systemic white racism and longing for white KKK_Nazi supremacy in this country. Fuck trump...
Caliman73
(11,760 posts)Even with all that Trump is doing, when you hope that someone is killed, if that person is the sitting US president, no matter how big an ass he is, that is not acceptable.
She could have said many other things like, "I am hoping that he ends up being perp walked out of the White House" or "That man is the worst threat to America in the last 50 years, and he needs to be out of office. Something like that, but wishing assassination on someone, especially when you are an elected official, is not okay.
heaven05
(18,124 posts)trump AND his supporters wish all POC dead or emigrated......don't lecture....Caucasiansplaining what is acceptable is not meaningful to me. For her career, I am glad she apologized......I could care less if trump died tomorrow.....I did not say assassinated, died. Just so my words are not twisted......and changed as happens ALOT of the time.
Caliman73
(11,760 posts)You know nothing about me or my experiences. That is a presumptuous thing to say. Running around all worked up attacking everything in sight. Don't presume cause it makes you look like a fool.

(11,760 posts)You think you are the only one who is angry? You think you are the only one who has suffered? You just sound ridiculous, like you don't have sense in that head. You do you though. Good luck.

(18,124 posts)spare me.......like I said..........
Caliman73
(11,760 posts)roll your eyes all you want. You are the only one on this thread defending the statement wishing for someone to be assassinated, and I can guarantee you aren't the only person of color on this thread. As I said, you do you...
heaven05
(18,124 posts)whether someone like you disagrees or prefers to stay in their bubble of safety that has always been the fall back of those who lack the empathy it would take to end racism. Trump is a POS and so are those around him. I repeat, even with a horror like pence in the wings, I would rejoice if the idiot-potus POS dropped dead tomorrow for any reason....and I give a shit less who is represented in this thread race wise, I just know I give a fuck less about that potus POS voted in by racists and the people of the new confederacy and defended and whitesplained as normal by those same.
Anger at this POS called potus is normal whether you like it or agree with it. No one has asked you your opinion about AA anger, particularly mine. So I DO NOT CARE about whether you agree with the person who is the subject of this thread......I saw not much of this so called offense here when a man of substance, POTUS and family man like Barack Hussein Obama ran this country while being called every derogatory name a white person could dredge up from the toilets they called minds......fuck trump. back atcha...

(8,109 posts)But calling for the assassination of a public figure is indeed beyond what should be acceptable.
I didn't like it when Republicans (including Trump) started calling for "second amendment solutions for dealing with Democratic opponents, and I dislike the same sort of irresponsible rhetoric coming from Democrats.
Besides which, it gives GOP apologists the chance to say "both sides do it."

(18,124 posts)as potus wanting all POC either emigrated or back in the cotton fields.....THAT goes "beyond too far"....

(16,334 posts)I expressly said that was wrong too. And I am not defending the turnip or turnip lovers. But I will follow the law and expect others to as well.
You can argue with yourself.

(7,066 posts)It bothers me that she is retreating to the Lord Jesus Christ. She can still do that but on her own time. We have to require better of the politicians on our side.
Trump should step down... But she's AA so that's different right?

(18,124 posts)everyday....a Deandre Harris, a Heather Heyer....he calls for that everyday since slithering into 1600 and his storm troopers are carrying out his wishes....please this fact that POC can't be angry and show it toward an enemy of the African-americans in this country is ludicrous. But it has always been this way when ANYONE black shows anger and emotion not cleared by Caucasian norms covering anger.
LuvLoogie
(7,066 posts)But if you endeavor to be a statesman, then you have a responsibility to the rule of law. You owe this to your constituency.
Assassination is against the law. Eye for an eye is war. If we don't require statesmen to act accordingly, then it is not long before the street battles escalate.
If we don't shut down this kind of rhetoric from elected officials on our side, then we aren't being responsible as citizens.
trump and his minions want us angry. They want us to pull the trigger.
heaven05
(18,124 posts)by the way, they have already pulled the trigger many, many times since the times of the confederate south of the past and so have the confederates of today....tell that "statesman" BS to the idiot boy-potus. "Eye for an eye" Okay...tell that to Trayvon Martin et al....your "responsibility" leaves much room for improvement especially in the area of race relations, white privilege and entitlement and the ability to sit in a safe place, whiteness, and call out people who do not adhere to your Caucasian norms of acceptable levels of African-american anger at racism and murder. I do not care to be lectured on your anger acceptability levels. Just don't care. Meaningless to me..
LuvLoogie
(7,066 posts)An elected official has another level of responsibility. You make anger an excuse, a substitute for justice.
You will be left with whomever is the most angry, the most angry, the most armed.

(1,001 posts)Comments like these give Republicans the opportunity to paint themselves as being under attack by the "looney left" or "intolerant left" or whatever slur they will try to use.
It kind of sucks but we need to be better than they are and not give them the opportunity to play victim.

(6,324 posts)She just handed any opponent in the next election a golden issue to campaign against her on.
So, even if for no other reason, she has done critical damage to her ability to be re-elected and as such should resign and allow a more electable person to replace her, or at a minimum announce she won't run again. Otherwise she is placing control of that particular seat at much greater Leila of flipping hands than it needs to be.
The overall good should come before her personal interests here.

(37,457 posts)If a Republican had said the exact same thing about President Obama, we would all be calling for their resignation, Secret Service investigation, and indictment on Federal charges of threatening the POTUS.
Trump is a Nazi-sympathizer, racist, and general POS, but she should still resign. If she stays in office, I'd lay money on the Republican beating her next election. She should gracefully step down, and do her atonement and other good works in the private sector.

(42,821 posts)Folks here called (correctly) for the resignation of state and local repub officials who made racist comments about Michelle Obama (and who did resign) and for the resignation of the Atlanta Jewish Times editor who called for the assassination Barack Obama (and who did resign).
We look like idiot hypocrites if we defend a Democrat who called for Trump to be assassinated.

gone .
Let's not lie to ourselves.
I'd rather he just drop dead on camera.
But whatever you can live with.

(11,760 posts)That is not the point. You don't just act in a moral and ethical way because you expect others to do it. You do it because you don't want to contribute to the crap that is going on. You do your part to make it a better world regardless of what others do.
It is good that she apologized. It shows that she is at least a big enough person to recognize the mistake.
I don't see anyone on here lying. We all want bad things to happen to bad people. I want Trump humiliated. I don't want him to die, I want him to suffer, after due process. I want him in a cell, thinking about what got him there. Or, because I know he would likely not consider his role. I would be satisfied with him just sitting in a cell for a few years. Socially, I would be happy if people stopped using or buying any Trump product and he suffered economic ruin because of his disgusting behavior and views. The thing is that we don't have to debase ourselves like Republicans do by wishing for someone to be killed.
