They will take your breath away. It is as simple as Black and White. The stark reality has never been more clear.
This.

(12,448 posts)I love B&W photography. Whoever took them was a great photographer.

(84,048 posts)I have dabbled in photography and always edited my photos to black and white or sepia. I find that color distracts from the scene in front of you. B&W draws your eye into the story that is unfolding.
Thanks NR.

(9,776 posts)are different than editing our color photos to black and white. I get the general concept, though the details are a bit technical for my understanding.
Anyway, excellent photos from Boston. Thanks for sharing.

(34,126 posts)When you shoot in color then convert based on which causes colors you use to filter the conversion, and you have the original full spectrum shots, so you can keep converting until you get it right. When you shoot in black and white you've said already given up the additional information.

(9,776 posts)It seems I was misremembering or misinterpreting the idea of, Better to shoot in black & white for a final B&W image.
I think the idea is that while any particular color image can be converted to a wide range of B&W images, shooting in B&W will lead the photographer to specific choices, particularly related to composition and light, choices which won't be available after the shot is taken.
However, the author of this piece on the subject suggests that if one learns to "see in B&W," a shot can be optimised for a B&W outcome even when shooting in color.

I also found this article about why one would bother making B&W images at all, which I found very interesting. https://fstoppers.com/education/why-its-still-important-shoot-black-and-white-48141
I only have a failing point & shoot and my failed phone camera just now, so I'm lucky to get any shots that are even half decent, so I won't do much with this info now. But maybe in the future. So, thanks again for your response!

(34,126 posts)is snobbery.
I've done extensive photography, and personally processed the photographs in both a physical and an electronic darkroom.
When B&W and the physical darkroom was popular, you made choices at a different stage. You chose and shot through filters to create the B&W mood you wanted. You added softening, sharpening, darkening, gamma correction, etc. during the physical darkroom process.
All the electronic processing does is shift when you make those choices. You capture full data - and decide what to discard in the darkroom.
There is a qualitative difference between film photography and digital photography - but I don't see a qualitative difference based on when you make your creative choices. (Making them during post-processing makes it easier to get just the image you want, because you have control over the tweaking - without having to sacrifice data before you enter the darkroom (whether electronic or physical).)
(I'm not addressing photo manipulation - such as photo restoration. That's more art than photography, and isn't the same thing as shifting the same kind of creative choices all photographers make. I do both, but I'm clear about when I'm manipulating a photo to alter reality v. when I'm post-processing (either darkroom) to evince the mood I want from my photograph.
