Was that really necessary? He was a good person and did what he could for children with Muscular Dystrophy. Don't hate him for political views.

He supported Raygun and Trump.
No tears shed here.

Why else would you bring that up?
Right?

(694 posts)Nothing to do with you, and most certainly not an attack on you.
I don't think he was a particularly nice guy, in fact i think he was a bigot, and my point was you don't get to cherry-pick someone's life just to make them seem nicer than they were. He was a fan of Raygun, who himself was a bigot, and Dump who, as we all know, is a racist.
Did he do great things for disabled kids? Apparently so, but he also had a very dark side. Neither cancels the other out, but both need to be acknowledged imo.

"Protesters decry Lewis assessment of living with MD as being half a person. He once said in response, Pity? (If) you dont want to be pitied because youre a cripple in a wheelchair, stay in ya house!

I don't think he was a good person, and political views reflect who people are. If he supported trump (who btw mocked the disabled), it shows what kind of person he was

(26,181 posts)Including one I know very well. She and her family actually hated him, and considered him an extreme bigot against disabled folks, who tried to make money and hold until celebrity on their backs.

Do you agree that if people in wheelchairs don't want pity they should stay home? Are you defending his statements? do you believe (as he said) that a person in a wheelchair is half a person? Are you OK with that?

That's about the highest praise I can give a person.
RIP Jerry Lewis.

(18,837 posts)That cantankerous interview from (I believe) last year, as an example.
I guess that at this moment there's no shortage of positive or negative things that could be written about the man, so I'll simply sawy "RIP."

(13,081 posts)Harry Shearer claims to have seen it in the 70s at Lewis's house. Lewis himself said that he had the movie (he paid personally to finish it) but was so terrible nobody would see it while he was alive.
He's not alive anymore, obviously.
I, for one, would like to see what is apparently the most accidentally offensive movie ever made. Of course, I'm also a big John Waters fan and think "Pink Flamingos" is high art.
edhopper
(33,658 posts)It's not clear if it was. I think he filmed it and never edited a finished version.
Perhaps his estate will release what is there.
