There are some elementary and high schools in the south named after Robert E. Lee. Imagine a black child having to attend a school named after a man who fought to keep her/his ancestors in slavery. Then think about a Jewish child having to attend a public school named for Hitler. That may seem an extreme comparison, but not to a black child whose forbears were bought and sold, lashed, raped, and forced to labor until they died -- if they weren't lynched or beaten to death first.
Those who claim it's all about "southern heritage" are full of shit. It's about bigotry, hatred, and white supremacy.
(Google Robert E. Lee public schools. There are movements, currently in progress, to change the school's names.)
