Democrats feverishly looking to send President Trump to an early retirement should step back and take a deep breath, a leading California Democrat said Thursday.
With the GOP controlling both houses of Congress, nothing is going to happen until Republican members are presented with examples of very specific conduct that says their vote (to impeach Trump) is justified, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank, told The Chronicles editorial board. My Republican colleagues are nowhere near ready to make that conclusion.
On Tuesday, Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier of Hillsborough said in a tweet that the president is showing signs of erratic behavior and mental instability that place the country in grave danger. Time to invoke the 25th Amendment, which allows a president to be removed from office.
Other Democrats, including Reps. Maxine Waters, D-Los Angeles, and Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks (Los Angeles County), have long called for Trumps impeachment, and the number is likely to grow after the presidents controversial comments this week in response to the death of a protester during a white supremacist event in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday.

(841 posts)Pence would likely be far more competent than Trump at getting legislation passed. Right now Trump is like an albatross around the neck of the GOP so that might help the Democrats in 2018.

(13,468 posts)Which is why I have wondered why the Rs won't get Trump out of there?

(841 posts)They don't want angry and possibly armed Trump supporters showing up at their offices or even their homes.

I'd have to agree with the posit that Rs are scared of Trump's crazy base because Pence would put a much more benign face on the GOP agenda and be a rubberstamp for every bill that crosses his desk. Rs must be secretly pining for him to call a cabinet meeting and invoke the 25th amendment removing Trump from his duties.

(3,613 posts)I think that Schiff is messing with someone.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)Trump himself has not been implicated in anything.
Not Ruth
(3,613 posts)The existence of a special counsel means that he has been implicated to some degree already. Whether or not it is to a degree that justifies further legal action is what is being investigated.
I could definitely be wrong.

(10,137 posts)But no direct Exposed correlation. I think that is by design however; if specific proof re Trump himself were made public, he would do everything he could to close the investigation, including firing everyone involved in it. If it feels to him(trump) that it's just those around him that are in trouble, his literally insane ego will tell him he is once again untouchable because he's "like a really smart person." The reality is if he has done an illegal financial desl(s) w/ criminals, he'll be caught. He's not smart enough to cover his tracks so that the likes of Mueller's team won't find it. Mueller is going to make an ironclad case. No weaseling out of this one. It's gonna take time. Schiff is commenting on that imo

(17,865 posts)They should continue to say that the Republican leadership needs to do its job of executive oversight. Tie their failure to do their job around their necks.
I could imagine a speech like the Game of Thrones ruler Lyanna of Bear Island.
Ryan when Trump allied with racists you refused the call. McConnell when Trump told your constituents they should just move for jobs you refused the call. etc.

(15,543 posts)He is everything they want to be, and apparently - based on the evidence -
republicans are delighted to have him serve as a model for their children and grandchildren. None of the republican so-called "spiritual leaders" has uttered so much as a peep of dissent about his overt racism or his sexual assault or any of the other sub-human, anti-American crap he has spewed; instead they hold him up as their super special "god-appointed" leader. That speaks volumes about who they really are. Let no one be deceived.

Not that Trump gives a crap about religion in the slightest.

(58,724 posts)I try to imagine how Fox News would be covering current events if it was Hillary doing and saying the things Trump are saying and doing. Not to mention how Congressional Republicans would be responding.
