Seattle Mayor on removal of Confederate memorial in Capitol Hill
SEATTLE -- An online petition has gained more than 2,700 supporters asking Seattle Mayor Ed Murray to remove the United Confederate Veterans Memorial in Capitol Hill's Lake View Cemetery.
In a statement issued by Murray on Wednesday, the mayor condemned statues and flags that represent slavery and oppression and said it is the right thing to do to remove them.
"During this troubling time when neo-Nazis and white power groups are escalating their racist activity, Seattle needs to join with cities and town across the country who are sending a strong message by taking these archaic symbols down," Murray said in his statement.
Murray said his office has contacted the Lake View Cemetery to express concerns regarding the monument, according to his statement. The cemetery is located on private property ...
