Scared he is going to become violent: Mother of Charlottesville assailant James Alex Fields twice

called 911

The 20-year-old Ohio man charged with driving into a crowd of activists in Charlottesville, allegedly threatened or assaulted his disabled mother so violently as a young teenager that she twice called 911, police records show.

In one incident in 2010, Samantha Bloom, who uses a wheelchair, reported that her son, James Alex Fields, had struck her in the head, put his hands over her mouth and threatened to beat her after she told him to stop playing video games, the records show. Bloom said her son was taking medication to control his temper, and she told authorities she was locked in the bathroom.

In October 2011, Bloom called 911 to say that her son was “being very threatening toward her” and that she didn’t feel “in control on the situation,” according to a dispatcher’s notes from the call.

And in November 2011, police were asked to come to the house because Bloom was said to want Fields to be assessed at a hospital, according to the records. He had spat in her face, said the caller, whose connection to the family is not clear in the records.

Maybe this has been mentioned in other threads (I was away this weekend), but it only just now suddenly occurred to me: Last week, we decided to watch the premiere of the Netflix show "Mr. Mercedes." I was horrified, disgusted. The opening sequence involves the main character driving his car into an innocent group of people who have lined up in the middle of the night to wait in line for a job fair. Carnage. A mother and her infant murdered. Dozens maimed. And then there are the scenes with the mother. And the computer stuff. I said I wouldn't be watching the series any further.

And I just have to wonder if this sick, violent kid saw that. The car assault, the mother thing, the anger. People will scoff at me, but this kind of sick stuff can trigger already sick people. I am so tired of our violent, rude culture. We don't need shows about demented killers or "alternate histories" where the white South succeeds in preserving slavery. We don't need trash-talking housewives or ... okay, you can see I've had it.
