RALEIGH
The Raleigh man behind the viral Twitter account @YesYoureRacist said on Monday that since publishing photos of torch-carrying white supremacist protestors Saturday in Charlottesville, he has received remarkable support but also death threats.
Logan Smith, who works as the communications director for Progress NC Action, says the account had about 65,000 followers Saturday morning. On Monday afternoon, it had topped 307,000 and was climbing.
I have been receiving death threats for the past 20 hours or so, Smith said in a phone interview. They have been threatening my family, too. The overall response of course has been 99 percent positive, but theres always that extremely small but extremely loud and extremely angry minority that bites back.
Smith said the threats seem to come from followers of the white supremacist website Stormfront, from neo-Nazis and from alt-right groups.
Theyre mostly anonymous Twitter accounts with three followers that only tweet non-stop hate, he said. But theres a lot of them and they are mad.

The attention from @YesYoureRacist got one man disowned by his family and one man fired from his job at a hot dog restaurant in California.
[He was seen marching in Charlottesville with white supremacists. Now hes fired.]
Im not trying to get anybody fired, Smith said. Im not contacting anybodys employers. But you know, if someone goes to a white supremacists rally and their employer sees them, then thats their prerogative and thats something they probably should have thought about.

(81,594 posts)Drama or no, I hope Twitter and other outlets STOP giving these assholes a forum.
Remember, the First Amendment does NOT sanction or cover OR excuse your crying "FIRE!" in a crowded theater.
But at this point Twitter is just enabling attacks on Democracies around the world for clicks and profit.

(2,157 posts)They want to be racists, but they don't want the world to know it. They want to be racists but they don't want to bear the consequences - they think they can be racists and everyone will put up with them. Guess what.............

(10,131 posts)they wouldn't have a problem with being outed.
Even they know what they are doing is not going to be perceived well widely.
That's why these cowards often have to carry on wearing hoods or operating in the shadows.
Keep shining the bright lights on these ignoramuses. Like cockroaches, they'll have no choice but to run for cover. Hopefully, in their haste, their hatred gets left behind and exterminated.

(150 posts)After a day of work at the Engineering Research Center at the University of Arkansas, Kyle Quinn had a pleasant Friday night in Bentonville with his wife and a colleague. They explored an art exhibition at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and dined at an upscale restaurant.
Then on Saturday, he discovered that social media sleuths had incorrectly identified him as a participant in a white nationalist rally some 1,100 miles away in Charlottesville, Va. Overnight, thousands of strangers across the country had been working together to share photographs of the men bearing Tiki torches on the University of Virginia campus. They wanted to name and shame them to their employers, friends and neighbors. In a few cases, they succeeded.
But Mr. Quinns experience showed the risks.
A man at the rally had been photographed wearing an Arkansas Engineering shirt, and the amateur investigators found a photo of Mr. Quinn that looked somewhat similar. They were both bearded and had similar builds.
By internet frenzy standards, that was proof enough.

(6,324 posts)Don't go off half cocked with nothing more to collaborate you claim than a photo that kinda resembles a person.
It's fine to name names if you have done you homework and have your shit in order and know with a high level or certainty you are right. But that's not what has been happening in every case here.
A little bit of work to verify before running off half cocked doesn't take much time or effort, and it's better to get it right a day later than rush in and be wrong right away.

(6,324 posts)As noted above.
And if those people decide to they will probably be able to sue the shit out of him and likely Progress NC Action and bankrupt them both.
As I said in my other post on this, it's great to expose people but you damm sure better have your shit in order before you go naming names. If he and the organization get sued a lot of time and money that could have been put to much better use will go out of the good fight.
