This phrase, as part of the overall statement that Trump made, has been lambasted and dissected for most of the last 48 hours.
However, there is one thing that I have not heard mentioned.
Up until that point, he was clearly reading from a prepared statement. He is terrible at that kind of delivery so it is completely obvious.
But right as he gets to the "on many sides" part, he looks up and accelerates his delivery.
I think he went off script. I think he was handed a statement that would have been a great deal more direct but HE HIMSELF added the qualifier to soften the message.
Maybe it doesn't matter but it seems to be that much more obvious how important it was for him to make excuses for his supporters.

(58,773 posts)I've posted several times now, that the "many sides" comment is very like the "everybody is doing it" defense most adults would not accept from a 5 year old.
Trump hates prepared speeches, he's never really comfortable with them and it increases the sense of total insecurity he exudes most of the time. He comes across as a whiny pre-teen most of the time.
