That way anything deemed "over the line" can be excused. The problem with that logic, is Rump has no sense of humor whatsoever, and he's said repeatedly that he never jokes.

Side note: My mom was once married to a bonafide psychopath who used to f**k with all of us by saying intensely frightening things, then wait for the reaction. Depending on our response, he would either say "I'm joking" (if we started to panic), or alternately "I'm totally serious" (if we thought this might be one of those times he was "joking" ). I came to realize it was a way to keep everyone in a constant state of fear. I haven't seen him in many years, but I'll never forget how helpless he made us all feel when he did that, which was often.
