or is he so damaged that people, even if they endorse that action, will still have strong reservations about Trump?

(99,716 posts)One of the reasons Eisenhower was elected was because he promised to go to Korea, presumably to end the war.

(29,234 posts)2M people die in South Korea... and Guam or Hawaii get nuked.
Yes, we will retaliate and wipe out the NK military and another 1M plus North Koreans... but... support for the war will fade fast.

(28,270 posts)If we launched a conventional strike on NK it would not do enough damage IMO. Plus it will be easy to see all the forces getting ready to attack beforehand.
Trump will have to use nukes. Those horrendous weapons will kill millions on the Korean peninsula, friend and foe alike. The world will forget about the strutting fat bastard former dictator of NK quickly and focus on the horrible act which we committed, the effects of which will go on for decades long after Trump takes his seat in hell.
Huge clouds of radioactive dust and dirt will circle the globe and millions of people will be exposed to it and take it into their bodies.
If enough nuclear weapons are used it could cause crop failures on a grand scale followed by famines.
We will be pariahs, feared, hated and loathed by all. 24/7/365 a parade of ghastly burned, maimed and irradiated Koreans will be on YouTube and news programs.
Japan is at risk as well.

(7,581 posts)So I don't think the 74% will be giving Trump the benefit of the doubt.
We either have to protest hugely at the White House or all refuse to pay our taxes or boycott every corporate good in America. We need to do something.
Another thought - if we think China is going to continue to hold out debt and be our trading pals after we preemptively strike North Korea, we are nuts. Buy rice and beans.

(31,261 posts)The early days of war have few detractors. But when the real bleeding and dying starts, a different story. North Korea was not a pushover in 51-53 and we should not expect them to be one today.

(23,977 posts)50% of Republicans are already rallying for him, the vast majority of the rest will join them when the bombing starts
25% of Independents are already for him, expect 2/3 of the rest will join in for the wargasm
let's say 5-10% of Democrats are already for Trump, i'd guess another 2/5 would rally behind Trump for the preemptiveness
All the Republicans, most of the independents, about half of the Democrats - that pushes him into 60-70% approval range
so yes. sorry to say, we're a nation of warmongers, we like to kill stuff, we enjoy causing violence, and that will be reflected in his post-attack approval numbers. right now all we have is a hammer, so it's no surprise we'll treat every situation like a nail.

(23,977 posts)people will be scared, and scared people tend to cling to whoever appears to be offering safety. who will that be? why, the BLOTUS himself and the military he nominally commands. i'm expecting a global shift toward fascism in the wake of the NK inferno.
damage to SK and Japan will be seen widely as post-hoc justification for whatever atrocities BLOTUS "preemptively" commits.

(23,977 posts)Americans may be tired of lies, but we'll eat them up when they're sugar-coated with war.
the people who won't buy into it are in the 50% of Democrats and 1/3 of Independents.
starting a war is a safe bet for a preznit who wants to pump approval ratings.

(99,716 posts)I would hate to support Chump in anything but if North Korea attacks us or an ally Chump would be justified in responding.
But there is no way in Hell I will support a first strike by any president.

(4,614 posts)Rally around the flag. Unite in defense of the homeland, etc. etc. etc. His base and a lot of Republicans are already rooting for him to nuke N. Korea, which many of them could not point out on a map of the world if their lives depended on it. I am concerned that a war (whether it is N. Korea, Iran, or elsewhere) will be used as a convenient fulcrum to attempt to suspend elections, institute martial law, etc. In the event he goes all out for war I think it's a 50/50 crapshoot whether Trump's "Generals" will back him or ashcan him.

(21,652 posts)accomplishing absolutely nothing in the process, and Fareed Zakaria was on CNN with a huge smile saying "today is the day trump become president"
so imagine the response to a nuclear war.........
what i would actually hope for is that the people overthrow the government, occupy congress and the white house until new elections are held. sounds extreme but it is better than letting trump destroy everything we have fought for.

(11,686 posts)any other country that does or says the slightest thing to insult him ( intentional or not. ) His new hated country is Germany. How long will it be before he decides to bomb them? How long before he decides to bomb Mexico? Just blow those damn Mexicans away and no more problem with them crossing the boarder. If he needs or wants immigrants they can all come from his new found allies countries. I keep hearing that any president who has involved this country in war despite it being legitimate or illegitimate becomes very popular and disgustingly well loved. This entire world is in immediate danger because of his selfish arrogance and hate.

Look at what 9/11 did. We're supposed to be sadder but wiser. But with #45 and his grifters at the top of the org chart, clearly Americans aren't wiser at all. They'll genuflect if scared enough.
