(182,966 posts)I was in the Army during the first Gulf War and they started playing that after Taps. At first none of knew what we were supposed to do. Attention? Parade rest? The NCOs finally said we should just wait.
This went on for months. Finally the groans and the snickering worked. I asked one day "Do we really have to stand here and listen to this crap?" It's such a corny song let alone the blind oblivion and subservience- and yes I was IN the Army. The Sgt.s said we could fall out.
We were the first in line for chow. First to head downtown. Etc.
I HATE that song.

(65,302 posts). . . on those wounded warrior commercials always running on MHC and AHC. I want to slap the taste out of Greenwood's mouth every time in hear that pathetic "work of art".
Of course, the usage here would "honor" Greenwood. He's an idiot hick who happens to have a pretty voice.

(9,350 posts)Although I did not serve in the military, the sad part for me is that Donald Trump is a guy who received 5 deferments and never served in the military. There is a part in that song that says, "I'll stand up next to you and defend her still today". One can argue that there is more than one way to defend the United States. Maybe this song is actually about defending America through words. For instance, if someone says, "America is a horrible country", another person could defend America by saying "no, America is actually a great country". However, I have until today thought "defend her still today" meant in a military way. So, it is sad to me that a man who received 5 deferments would play that song with a picture montage of himself.
As far as I know Lee Greenwood did not serve in the military. I think he wrote the song with the intent of verbally defending America as opposed to militarily defending America. He claims he wrote the song due to so many people in, I think, the 80s bashing the United States of America. So, it seems he meant he would still verbally defend America.
