"SNIP............
MSNBCs rating surge is being powered by a surge in new cable news viewers as the Trump presidency has gotten more opponents involved and engaged which is bad news for the President and his party.
The AP reported:
Essentially, MSNBCs surge is fueled by newbies, people who werent regular cable news viewers. So the question remains of why these people are primarily going to MSNBC instead of CNN. CNNs prime time is panel-based, with a stream of people talking about the news. Unlike MSNBC, CNN regularly includes Trump supporters in the mix and some of those think Jeffrey Lord infuriate the presidents opponents. CNNs immediate announcement that it wasnt interested in outgoing White House press secretary Sean Spicer as a contributor was understandable given the administrations biting attacks on the network, but Spicer is likely to be more skilled than Lord.
The reason why CNN hasnt gained in the ratings like MSNBC has is simple. CNN provides airtime to contributors that anti-Trump viewers cant stand. They also provide a platform for anti-Trump voices that this president and his supporters cant stand. In a partisan political world, CNN is a network without a natural base viewership.
As Republicans and the White House know, surging ratings at a friendly cable news network can provide circumstantial evidence of an engaged base. People who choose to watch cable news are more likely to vote than those who dont. The fact that MSNBC is surging in the ratings due to viewers who are new to cable news suggests a groundswell of opposition to Trump and the Republican Party.

When I see Jeffrey Lordes or Kellann, I can't change the channel fast enough. I find myself watching way more MSNBC now.

(5,695 posts)Give Joy a daily program. Give her Chuckles Todd's spot at 5 pm. Nobody who tunes in to MSNBC wants to watch the 'political game coverage' that Todd and his ilk love to portray. Most of the people who are new to political cable channels are looking for the truth. To them, this new era or politics is not a game, and they are turned off by the incessant need to 'show both sides' because most of them are smart enough that it has long stopped being both sides. They want to watch news that lets them know that they're not crazy when they believe that Republicans really ARE crooked and craven, and that this presidency is NOT normal. AT ALL.

(1,194 posts)Prior to Trump's election, I avoided all talking heads and got my news from print where I could pick and choose what I wanted to read. I saw no need to submit to the "equal" coverage of listening to the flat earth society. After the election, in desperation, trying to find sanity, a Vermont friend of mine introduced me to the DU and Rachel. Now, I look forward to MSNBC in particular Rachel, Lawrence and Joy.
