After being told here I'm not terminal twice now, common drug stops some brain atrophy's!

NEW science article from Alzheimer’s Society below FTD info

I got my first hide in several months for posting exactly what the DUers involved asked me with a link and screen grab for No divisive group attacks. Guess they didn't like an honest answer!

I did some self delete to prevent any more attempts to hide more of my replies. After a hide you can't post, so I could no longer defend my side: You cannot post in this thread because you have had a post hidden within this thread.

So twice I've been told I'm not fatal (or even just imagined I have FTD).

Some credible links of FTD being fatal.

https://www.fightdementia.org.au/about-dementia/types-of-dementia/frontotemporal

How does frontotemporal dementia progress?
Although people with FTD may be assessed as having one of the three subtypes above, the disease will progress and symptoms of 2 or 3 subtypes are likely to occur.

FTD causes progressive and irreversible decline in a person’s abilities over a number of years, and is a terminal disease.

CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/12/14/frontotemporal.dementia/index.html

"And when they do get the news, it's very difficult," said Dickinson. "They are told, 'Your loved one has FTD. It's a neurological degenerative disease. It's fatal, and there is no cure. Now go home and deal with it.'"

http://www.medicinenet.com/pick_disease/article.htm
Frontotemporal dementia progresses steadily and often rapidly and is fatal. The duration of disease ranges from less than 2 years in some individuals to more than 10 years in others

http://www.primehealthchannel.com/frontotemporal-dementia-symptoms-stages-treatment-and-life-expectancy.html

IS FRONTOTEMPORAL DEMENTIA FATAL?

Yes, Frontotemporal Dementia is a fatal disease. Sufferers of this disease usually die within 10 years. In Frontotemporal Dementia death is usually a result of organ failure or an infection in some cases. Average Frontotemporal Dementia life expectancy is 7 years.

Not a cure but if it stops some dementia's from getting worse...

Two existing drugs can block cell death in mice with neurodegeneration

A new study shows that two drugs can block the death of brain cells in mice.

Thursday 20 April 2017 (After my post Friday a DUer sent me this today)

https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/news/article/190/two_existing_drugs_can_block_cell_death_in_mice_with_neurodegeneration

Building on an earlier breakthrough, Professor Giovanna Mallucci and her team at the University of Cambridge have identified two drugs that can block the death of brain cells in mice models of neurodegeneration. The drugs target the ‘unfolded protein response’ in cells, a natural defence mechanism that is activated by the accumulation of misfolded proteins in several neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s.

Funded by the MRC, Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer Drug Discovery Foundation and published today in the journal Brain, the study finds that a licensed antidepressant called trazodone and a compound in liquorice called dibenzoylmethane (DBM) are able to reduce brain cell death in mice with prion disease and with frontotemporal dementia.

Dr Doug Brown, Director of Research and Development at Alzheimer’s Society said: “We’re excited by the potential of these findings. They show that a treatment approach originally discovered while researching prion disease might also work to prevent the death of brain cells in some forms of dementia. This research is at a very early stage and has not yet been tested in people - but as one of the drugs is already available as a treatment for depression, the time taken to get from the lab to the pharmacy could be dramatically reduced.”

“The drug blocks a natural defence mechanism in cells which is overactive in the brains of people with frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s, so has the potential to work for several conditions. So far it has only been tested in mice with frontotemporal dementia but Alzheimer’s Society is now funding the researchers to test it in models of Alzheimer’s too.”

I've followed your posts here for a long time. I get the impression you're too tough to go quietly into the night. Never give up the fight Steve. (I know you won't. Doesn't seem your built that way.) NGU!

I have understood that ALZ is fatal. That's why it's called the long goodbye, altho I've never read about it in detail. Although the actual cause of death could I guess be different in the end (much like AIDS sufferers may have a proximate cause of death of something else, but it comes from the fact that the person had AIDS).

I'm so sorry you have this. How scary.

I saw the movie about it with Julianne Moore. Very powerful, moving movie. I hope this treatment gets approved quickly. Will you be able to afford it, or are you on Medicare & Medicare will pay for it? It's a shame we have to consider the cost of treatments.

But great to have you back. Must have been one of the few juries I wasn't asked to be on. But thanks so much for the info. My mom had Alzheimer's and it is the long goodbye. So glad serious progress is being made. Hopefully this will move along quickly, and since they're dealing with an already licensed product combined with a natural source product, it should.

On a strictly selfish note...damn. There goes the price of licorice.

review but not ready for the market or not yet in trail? I can't imagine how anyone would not realize that this is not only a fatal disease but one of the most heinous given the tragic progression. Let's just hope that the FDA will allow experimental testing of new drugs for this one!!! There are so many people who are being diagnosed.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this at DU. I'm shocked and saddened by that.

p.s. My father also died with the disease but like you he was a super outdoor person. Loved his garden was always busy, always outside ate really well and he had prostate cancer as well. He also had macular degeneration and was deaf in one ear and almost deaf in the other. He lived 17 years from the time he was diagnosed and only became truly "out of it" the last year. He made it to 90 so I know you can fight this and you can hold this monster at bay for a very long time!!!!!
