Apparently, new White House chief of staff John Kelly is unable to stop the war, or is siding with McMaster against Bannon. The Weekly Standard says the two camps are, going to the mattresses, the famous phrase from Mario Puzos The Godfather on mob caporegimes setting up secret apartments with mattresses for soldiers to sleep on, whenever a war between the Families became bitterly intense.
McMaster has been on a firing spree of Bannon loyalists. Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the senior director for intelligence on the National Security Council who provided information to Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) about unmasking during the Barack Obama administration, was ousted today. Derek Harvey was ousted last week. Rich Higgins was ousted two weeks ago. Former Breitbart.com columnist Tera Dahl was ousted last month.

On Wednesday, radio host Laura Ingraham tweeted a months-old article from the New York Times about McMasters break with the administration on Islam,' the Weekly Standard explained. Meanwhile, blogger Mike Cernovich has been tweeting links to a website called McMasterLeaks, which contains a single blog post with multiple examples of how McMaster is undermining Trump.

For some time, Steve Bannon has been considering leaving the White House. One of Bannons closest buddies in the West Wing was Reince Priebus, now gone, the Weekly Standard revealed. A newly emboldened H.R. McMaster, purging Bannonites with the backing of John Kelly (and the president), could hasten his exit.

(15,251 posts)This smells to me of the "Night of the Long Knives" or Operation Hummingbird. A would be American dictator is being normalized. So far there have not been actual deaths or blood shed as involved in Trump's foreign allies standard procedures.

(493 posts)Hey, Weekly Standard: The phrase is "gone to the mat" to indicate a struggle. Although in this White House, "gone to the mattress" may be more appropriate.

(52,475 posts)"go to the mattresses" was used in "the godfather", and tends to mean simply all-out war between rival factions.
"go to the mat" tends to mean to strongly defend, advocate, or stick up for someone or something.
both expressions mean all-out fighting, but the "mattresses" version tends to imply more aggression than defense, and doesn't generally imply that there's any cause or reason for the fighting.
at least that's my take on it.

(5,857 posts)other than the fact its a military coup, I'd rather leave Trump on the golf course and the actual governing to the (former) generals. Washington, Grant, Ike were pretty good. Most of the rest were middling except for Andrew Jackson.

He's usually at the bottom of the "worst presidents" lists.

(5,857 posts)Although he's usually at the "top" of the bottom 10, more than a few lists have him in the 20's.
