Lest we forget, regardless of what the White House might say...

The New Colossus" is a sonnet that American poet Emma Lazarus (1849–1887) wrote in 1883 to raise money for the construction of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. In 1903, the poem was engraved on a bronze plaque and mounted inside the pedestal's lower level.*

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
MOTHER OF EXILES. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

We SHOULD take what the rest of the world throws away, because at our best, well, to turn a phrase...

We can rebuild you.
We have the technology.
You can be that.
Smarter.
Stronger.
BETTER.

It fills me with a kind of existential sadness that the Citizens who voted for Trump, might not actually agree with that assessment of what this country can be.

THAT'S the America I love. THAT'S the America that will beat back Trump, Miller, Bannon and their white supremacist friends and donors. A pox on them!
