If you allow in more of the English speaking, educated immigrants, those IT/engineering/doctors jobs (not to mention call center jobs) will have more supply that will hold down the salaries. Stephen Miller was berating Jim Acosta for asking clarification as to the immigration policy. Jim Acosta was fighting back.

Miller was discussing the requirements of the immigration plan and he and Acosta were going back and forth over the requirement that new immigrants speak English. Acosta cited the blurb off the Statue of Liberty ("give me your tired, your poor, etc.).

Miller started debating over the blurb and Acosta was shooting back. Miller wouldn't let Acosta ask a question and Miller kept interrupting. Acosta kept going (saying many immigrants come here and THEN learn to speak the language) and finally asked whether or not the requirement to speak English meant that only immigrants from Great Britain and Australia would be allowed in.

When you have the opportunity, please do try to watch the video. My explanation does not do the exchange the justice that it deserves. Acosta was awesome, and is one of the few reporters in the room who will give the Trumpster a little bit of hell - which always makes me smile.

my family came here from Europe somewhere around 1900 - my father's side from Poland, my mom's side from Italy and Sicily. Despite living here for over 70 years, my great grandmother barely spoke any English her entire life - she lived in a heavily Italian town and neighborhood in Connecticut and never needed to learn it: there is a pharmacy there that still says "Farmacia" on it to this day - the Italian spelling of Pharmacy. However, like almost all immigrants, her children and grandchildren all spoke fluent English. (Unfortunately, since my grandparents couldn't agree on whether to teach my mom Italian or Sicilian, they taught her neither, and my dad never learned Polish)

My wife came to the US from China about 20 years ago and spoke much better English than any of my great grandparents ever did when they came to American around 1900.
