General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo you live in a blue, red, or purple area?
My area of western Montgomery County, PA is purple, meaning a close mix of Democrats and Republicans. If you go towards Pottstown or Skippack or Gilbertsville, it gets more red/Republican. If you go south in the county, it is more blue/Democratic.
So what would you consider your area to be?

(816 posts)blue, but because Portland OR is just across the river from me, Vancouver WA feels red. I voted Purple.
WA is like NY where a large, liberal urban area (Seattle / NYC) skews the overall state vote enough to mask the fact that most of the state is more moderate than liberal.

(65,185 posts)PA is kind of that way with Philly and Pittsburgh, but not as clear cut as many say. Centre County, Allentown/Bethlehem, Erie, and Scranton/Wllkes Barre aren't bad. The Poconos are getting more Democrats to come from neighboring states, too.

Getting our car inspected. MSNBC (not Fox) on TV. Trump on talking about The Wall. Young woman got up and left. "I cannot watch that man". Old man said, "That Wall is the most absurd thing I ever heard of." "He ain't getting MY SS to pay for it". Wow, Toto, we aren't in Naples any more.
My guess purely from limited observation is that all these NYC and NJ people would turn this area Blue. I'm originally from NYC. As my Dad used to say, "You can take the boy out of NYC, but you cannot take NYC out of the boy".

(36,395 posts)keep the state from going red and staying there. The blue votes from the Detroit area and Flint are usually large enough to tip the state into the blue column in the national elections.

And the charter school movement soundly defeated in King Co. but passed by good margin in Pierce Co. I worry about our state. I cannot understand why Republicans have so much power in Olympia - except for our blue dog dems.
Good interactive map online showing how Washington St has fluctuated over the years. One of our best govs was Dan Evans, R. Sometimes I think WA State isn't so loyal to party as to candidate. We've been lucky and had good ones on both sides. Sometimes I think eastern Wa more dependably red than west coast dependably blue. Makes me nervous.
But for national offices we seem to be true blue.

That is bluer than blue.
When I cast my vote in the presidential primary at my local precinct at 10 AM I was like the 120 Dem to vote. Only 4 Republicans.

(9,279 posts)Upper Bucks here. Purple here too but too many Trump signs last fall. (They seemed to be in clusters, do idiots attract idiot neighbors?) Good friends live near Gilbertsville, they love the beautiful countryside but hate being surrounded by Trumpets.
Yes, I go up to the Saville Diner near Gilbertsville because of the food, and overhear way too much Dem bashing and Trump praise.

(13,390 posts)My neighborhood and most of the city I live in is blue. The county is more purple because the surrounding rural areas lean red. The state of Missouri is RED.

(8,692 posts)Going into the election I was really curious to see how Hillary would do in CA-48 because although Rohrabacher keeps getting re-elected because our candidates suck even more than he does, with each passing election Republican enthusiasm seems to be diminishing.
And indeed Hillary beat out Trump in CA-48.
The so-called Orange Curtain would fall if we ran competitive candidates everywhere in Orange County rather than just relying on demographics where any Democrat could win.

(31,261 posts)Most of the republicans here are moderate. But we have a significant number of the prolife single issue types and the conferderate flag decal types, but not as many as there used to be. We have a significant number of racially mixed kids in school and young adults, I would say between 5-10%, but some of the White grandparents are rabidly prolife and vote to deny a women her right to make her own choice. We have really good libraries and healthcare, housing and dental clinics for poor people. A progressive grandmother recently won a school board seat, but our county and large city leaders are mostly republicans.

My state legislative district is R+30. A consolation prize is that we have a Dem supermajority in the statehouse and can taste getting the trifecta in November.
My congresscritter is chair of the pro-life caucus and has been in office since I was a baby. Some of the other GOP congresscritters from my state are being newly targeted, but most election experts say this district is the last to flip and was drawn for a Republican.
The constituents are mostly ultra-orthodox Jews and affluent retirees.
