State Department spends $15,000 on rooms at Trump hotel

The State Department spent more than $15,000 to book 19 rooms at the new Trump hotel in Vancouver when members of President Trump’s family headlined the grand opening of the tower in late February.

The hotel bookings — which were released to The Washington Post under a Freedom of Information Act request — reflect the first evidence of State Department expenditures at a Trump-branded property since President Trump took office in January.

The president’s sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, their spouses, and the president’s daughter, Tiffany, were flanked by a heavy security presence on Feb. 28 during a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a VIP party hosted by developer Joo Kim Tiah, the son of one of Malaysia’s wealthiest businessmen.

The clause in question specifically states that "no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State."

But what's an emolument?

The simplest definition is that an emolument is compensation for services or from employment or an office. It has also been said to mean "advantage" or "benefit." The word comes from emolumentum, which is Latin for “profit” or “gain." According to Merriam Webster, the word has been used in English language since the late 15th century, and it is believed to have originally been used to refer to payment to a miller for grinding corn – derived from the word emolere, meaning "to grind up," with "the prefix e- here adding the notion of 'thoroughly,'" according to Oxford Dictionaries.

The ethics committee need some teeth that need to be gutted of partisanship.

The guy that was over it, said he had no power to do anything, just advise, that's wrong.

One thing we've learned in the era of deregulation, voluntary regulation is no regulation
