If you don't wish to see these Milestones on the Latest Threads page, then you can set your filter so they do not appear. In the black bar near the top of the page, the last drop-down menu sets your preference for Milestones. To remove the Milestones, select "No Milestones" and then click "Go!" to save.

a high level of activity in the related thread?
Those are gone now. Replaced by a triangle next to thread headers on the Latest Thread page to indicate threads with high activity.
