Aside from being an artist . . . My husband who is now just doing art and small shop jobs in his studio is a:
Blacksmith
HVAC and Plumbing guy - had his own business and sold it.
Metal works - turned it to an employee Co-Op
UNESCO Certified metal restoration specialist
He came here in 2001 to pursue prosperity. This guy "gets" him. He gets the people in his metal shop. He's getting money - but we have a lot going to my Indivisible group, our Council candidate since I opted not to run, Murphy, Wiecek, and blue assembly candidates right now.
We are going to support Peter Jacob in the 7th District Primary but I have a green light to "go big" with your candidate. He's "bello".

And after each Census the District Boundaries were fudged more and more until the Koch Brothers People gained power in 2000,know some of the players by name. You wonderful folks got duped big time. Congressman Obe warned the State that this was coming and people stayed home from the polls believing what Hate Radio and the Right Wing Milwaukee Papers were printing.

Anyway Dr., if you just say the name Randy Bryce anytime you run up with someone from Wisconsin and post the name of your candidates in Florida and I'll talk about them to the snowbirds from Wisconsin. There are tons of them...
Every time we say a good candidate's name, an angel gets her wings....

My point was, as was the point of the OP, we are saddled with RW cretins in seats of power in our respective states. That does NOT mean there are not progressive/liberals in each state that are working and contributing to a change in the power structure.
Florida is a common target for many here regardless of the many fighting for change.

(14,167 posts)Worked with the campaign to recall Walker. I really thought we had it. But too many wingnuts wanted to keep him. I don't understand it. Wisconsin has a fairly good public education system. Why has it gone so Republican -- is it really just the Koch $$$?

(10,147 posts)You don't get the number of signatures we got in a short time and then lose. Period. I was also in Madison with over 100,000 people a couple of times in bitter cold weather. The recall was B.S.

(14,167 posts)There was soooo much enthusiasm. I haven't seen anything like it in my life. People, even Republicans, were behind the unions and the teachers. We barely had to knock on doors -- people graciously welcomed us in and volunteered to help as well.
I cannot, for the life of me, see how the recall failed. But somehow it did. And now Walker seems more evil and emboldened than ever.
I have not done much research on Wisconsin voting methods, but do you use a paper ballot? It is clear to me that the biggest threat to American democracy is our broken voting process.

(146,189 posts)in 2018. That can only happen if Wisconsinites make it happen, and that's going to be extremely difficult in his district. No amount of outside money or participation will have much impact in his district.
Instead, it will take a concerted effort on the part of Wisconsin voters in that district and a spectacular GOTV effort that finds and delivers enough Democratic voters to do the job. It's going to require individual and group efforts by people living in his district, not money and not outsiders who don't know and understand the issues in that district.
I hope Bryce's campaign does well. I hope you'll be able to participate in the work needed to oust Ryan. I live across the border in Minnesota. I can't help. There are three Republican districts in Minnesota that need my attention. House elections are local elections. The people in Ryan's district are the ones who will have to do that job.
You have my best wishes and hopes. Please hope for our districts in Minnesota, in return. That's where I'll be working.

(22,474 posts)Remember how in 2010 the Democrats controlled the entire state government here in Wisconsin and then as a result of the 2010 midterm election the state flipped to complete Republican control?
Well that was largely because far too many voters on the Left chose to stay home while Republicans viewed it as their duty to vote. So Scott Walker was first elected governor and Russ Feingold lost his senate seat. And since 2010 was a census year that allowed the Republicans to gerrymander the state when they took power in 2011.
Frankly I don't see Democrats as having a candidate who has a real chance of beating Walker who now has a well-organized and well funded political machine behind him. So to have any chance at all of winning every voter on the Left needs to turn out and vote. No excuses, no whining about how the Democratic candidate is not pure enough or that people are just not excited enough or motivated enough to vote. It's time to grow up and face reality as it exists and do what is right.
