Peace activist visits Binghamton
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Peace activist and author Medea Benjamin was in Binghamton on Monday. Her message was clear: She believes drone aircraft are dangerous weapons that kill innocent people.
Benjamin was at Binghamton's City Hall to present Mayor Matt Ryan with a resolution to make Binghamton a 'No Drone Zone.' She believes drones are misrepresented as weapons with pin-point accuracy that save American lives. And she says they don't win wars, but rather create more conflict.
"Drone strikes that are going on in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia are counterproductive. They actually radicalize the population. They drive more people into the hands of groups like the Taliban and Al-Qaida and they create more anti-American sentiment, said Benjamin.
Benjamin is also promoting her book "Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control." She says when drones are flown out of places like Hancock Air Base in Syracuse, that makes surrounding cities targets for terrorist attacks.
