"What happens is the employee who's been here for 3 years and has more experience than a person making an entry-level wage, they will rightfully want more for their seniority," Olivo says. "So what it does to me as a business owner, by pushing up wage scale, it increases my expenses."
Olivo says that means he either has to increase revenues difficult in the current economy or he must find ways to cut expenses: cutting employees, not hiring new employees or bring in new technology to decrease the number of employees he needs.
"So it really hurts my current employees and it also prevents me from bringing on new ones," he says.

(562 posts)as compared to their hourly wage workers?
If he makes money off the back of the people, then he's nothing but a greedy pig.
And whines about giving some back to the workers who have been faithful for YEARS.
Hell, when my wife asked for a raise from a postal presorting company that has been taking advantage of the disabled for YEARS, the owner whined for weeks, and then gave her a quarter raise. Gee. Thanks for the additional 2 dollars a day. Quit the day we moved out of Tucson.

(2,307 posts)I was a member in the past and felt they were giving both sides of the story. If I did not know "Joe the Printer" was the mouthpiece of the NFIB, I would have thought he was just a man on the street.
NPR is so afraid of being called liberal they are becoming very conservative.
I am sure they will not post a correction, but if the woman interviewed in the story explaining what it takes to live on minimum wage turned out to be a "plant" by the Obama Administration you know they would not only issue a correction they may run a story on how Obama uses "plants" to get his message out.

(14,180 posts)had the distinct impression that they had become just another corporate shill to add to the cacophony of corporate whore voices out there polluting the public airwaves. But I haven't really listened or watched since 2002, so I'm probably not the best qualified to speak to the issue.
I thus have no idea how much (or little) of public funds they receive. But my support for them by now is only tepid at best.
I should point out one exception to my own personal stance: if DUers I respect recommend a Frontline program, I will try to watch it when it airs here. I watched a couple good FL specials on the financial crisis, thanks to DU recs ahead of time.

(45,851 posts)Moorestown, NJ (June 9, 2012) Local printer Joe Olivo, a member of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), appeared Sunday on national television opposite Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-Il), to debate legislation that would raise the national minimum wage nearly 40 percent.
My worst fear is that another expensive mandate from government is going to cause small businesses to find ways around hiring or keeping workers, said Olivo, who runs Perfect Printing of Moorestown, NJ.
Jackson is the sponsor of legislation that would raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $10. That would be a big increase in a good economy, said Olivo. In a sluggish economy with stiff competion and waning consumer demand, higher mandatory wages will hit small businesses hardest.
They just don't understand how the economy works," said Olivo. "If you mandate higher wages without an increase in consumer demand, then employers have very few options except to reduce payroll. That isn't what we need right now.

(2,307 posts)Most people listening to the story most likely felt they walked into a random small business and asked to speak to the owner. Joe is not a representative of small business but NFIB. If the lady who spoke of living on a minimum wage belonged to an organization which supports raising the minimum wage that should have been disclosed also, but I think she was really an average person.
It bring a question of honestly.
