(64,425 posts)Running the FAA is probably something that a private entity could probably do as well as the government, but even if so, what benefit is obtained by our government or the people?
The cost has to be covered somehow, so ticket prices go up, private companies start looking for ways to depress salaries to increase profits, and the system either improves not at all, or deteriorates for the same total cost.
There is no net gain in even pursuing this, so which Randian drone is he getting this from?
On Edit: Number of times the US. Gov't has gone bankrupt - zero.
Cannot say the same for the current occupant, so this may be an even worse idea than i thought.

(6,635 posts)would only apply to the air traffic control services, and not the regulatory functions of the FAA. As has been noted elsewhere on DU, the USA accommodates approximately twice the amount of air traffic as the whole of Europe and Canada combined.
While privatized ATC has proven to be cost-effective on a small scale, I don't believe that there is enough expertise in the private airline industry to effectively take on a task as large as the USA air traffic system.
I was an air traffic controller for 30-years, and still teach ATC to FAA new hires (I work for a defense contractor), so I've seen the trials and tribulations that got the FAA to its current status as the most efficient and safe ATC system in the world. I've also worked overseas on ICAO contracts in Nigeria, Bahrain, and Abu Dhabi, so I've seen the "other" side of ATC.
A for-profit operation would most likely degrade both the efficiency and safety of air traffic control in the USA. The current proposal would also eliminate about 30,000 non-control jobs.
