If you'll say it isn't, as soon as I replace my melted tires on my car, I'm going to drive through a wildfire to come over to your house and kick your sweaty ass.

(35,015 posts)They're discussing climate change as a political issue right now on ABC News; EJ Dionne is wondering why his conservative friends refuse to see the evidence. Duh.

(322 posts)The possibility of weather modification has been on the global radar since 1977. Since then, technology has come a long way....
1977 UN Environmental Modification Convention
Weather modification, particularly hostile weather warfare, was addressed by the "United Nations General Assembly Resolution 31/72, TIAS 9614 Convention[20] on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques" was adopted. The Convention was: Signed in Geneva May 18, 1977; Entered into force October 5, 1978; Ratification by U.S. President December 13, 1979; U.S. ratification deposited at New York January 17, 1980.[21]
[edit] US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
In the US, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration keeps records of weather modification projects on behalf of the Secretary of Commerce, under authority of Public Law 92-205, 15 USC § 330B, enacted in 1971.[22]
[edit] Proposed US Legislation
2005 U.S. Senate Bill 517 and U.S. House Bill 2995 U.S. Senate Bill 517[23] and U.S. House Bill 2995[24] were two bills proposed in 2005 that would have expanded experimental weather modification, to establish a Weather Modification Operations and Research Board, and implemented a national weather modification policy. Neither were made into law. Former Texas State Senator John N. Leedom was the key lobbyist on behalf of the weather modification bills.
2007 U.S. Senate Bill 1807 & U.S. House Bill 3445 Senate Bill 1807 and House Bill 3445, identical bills introduced July 17, 2007, proposed to establish a Weather Mitigation Advisory and Research Board to fund weather modification research
For the 2008 Olympics, China had 30 airplanes, 4,000 rocket launchers, and 7,000 anti-aircraft guns to stop rain. Each system would shoot various chemicals into any threatening clouds to shrink rain drops before they reach the stadium
Could this technology be used to prevent floods like what just happened in Russia and England? (could it be used by disaster capitalists to start floods?)
Can this technology be used to prevent hurricanes (or cause them?)
Why aren't they using this technology all over the US to bring relief from sweltering heat? In Colorado, why no seed some clouds to help reduce the spread of the fires etc?

(2,307 posts)environment which we have already damaged so much? What did those chemicals do to those who were at the Olympics? What happens when those chemicals end up in the ground water?
It seems we are a little too quick to use chemicals these days.

(322 posts)There are many weather modification corporations....someone is already employing them...
Colorado for instance, uses cloud seeding for their ski resorts, why not to prevent fires spreading?
SoutherDem
(2,307 posts)or we wouldn't be injecting chemicals to extract natural gas, so it must be something else.
I don't know much about cloud seeding, but doesn't it take clouds or a certain amount of moisture?
I recall when a friend spent a summer in Colorado she would tell me how the temperature would be hotter than here in Alabama but because of the low humidity it didn't feel as hot. Could it be there is not enough moisture to seeded?
But back to the use of chemicals. Would it be worth it if in 25 years there is a strange cancer spreading through out the region? I can't help but being reminded of another chemical application which seemed to be a god send, Agent Orange.
Also, it has been theorized that a small nuclear explosion over a hurricane could tear it apart. If so, we could have prevented Katrina and Andrew. Would that also be acceptable?
Just through our presence on the Earth and our love of fossil fuels we have brought this Climate Crises on ourselves by modifying the weather. Other than reducing our influence on the planet I can't support attempting to modify weather for our pleasure, as in the Olympics and ski resorts or to prevent tragic events. I just feel we are opening a pandora's box which we may never close.
This is just my opinion

(35,015 posts)That's how healthcare works too.....where preventative efforts can reverse many chronic conditions without medication, people would rather just take pill. The underylying problem is still there. Doesn't solve anything and may, in the long run, make it worse.

(322 posts)And if they aren't using it to prevent weather disasters, what ARE they doing?

(35,015 posts)Who knows what they're doing and why; it all boils down to power and control...so if you keep those two things in mind as the motivation, the reason isn't good.
