Support Thread for Kathy Griffin

She'll always be my favorite.

He had it coming, with all his hate and lies, attacking Obama and Clinton, grabbing women, and finally, ruining the world with his scorched-earth policies.

fRump's supporters foment violence, which she didn't. Hate crimes and violent assaults for racial reasons are very real. Many people will actually die under fRump's cutbacks, and he and his followers don't care at all.

So, this is a support thread for Kathy: Always honest, always human, always speaking up for sanity in the face of ignorance.

Hang in there, Kathy. Let it go and you'll find this news is nothing compared to what's coming.

Kathy Lee has a small fan base of Scary Movie viewers and some New Years Eve TV viewers.

Ted Nugent is a rocker and on the board of the NRA, with a base of semi-sane and completely mental followers.

The only reason why this is as big a story is that Democrats always cave and apologize, while Reps hold fast!

We keep trying to take the high ground, and it's not how you do trench warfare.

....that they might consider using the second amendment solution if Hilary got elected, or to beat up people at his Nuremberg-style rallies. To me that kind of rhetoric is far more dangerous as it legitimizes violence. And let's not forget Ann Coulter who expressed wonderful sentiments like wishing Tim McVeigh had gone to the New York Times Building instead. Yet, that wretched crone appears regularly on news outlets as a "conservative commentator." And of course let's not forget Russia observer Sara Palin and her infamous target website with Democrats in the crosshairs of a rifle scope. Certainly one of the targets, Gabby Giffords, won't ...ever. So if news corporations are to apply this penalty standard it should be applied evenly and none of these violence espousing cretins should appear on any of their programs in person. Same goes for the violence promoting "shoot these reporters" twit from Texas, or the violence committing Montana slammer. To me their appearance is more seriously offensive as it sends the message that their violence promotion is ok and penalty free and their opinions matter as if they are civilized people, which they are not.

Racists and Teapartiers with violent tendencies feel vindicated because of Trump's poisonous tirades. In my neighborhood, some people are receiving plastic bags with a note inside that states "White Lives Matter". This is a
neighborhood that has never seen a hint of racism until recently. It's downright scary.
We have a bumper sticker that has "Bernie" on it. It was blacked out with magic marker. It's frustrating that there's no way to fight back.

97. The bigger problem I have with her is she's distracting from RussiaGate
Fri Jun 2, 2017, 09:14 PM
Jun 2017

Trump is doing a great job of hurting himself and his party. Now at least some sympathy for his family has emerged, (although I personally think he doesn't really care about that either; just using it to his advantage). The point is, the world is becoming more and more united against him by virtue of his own actions. There is momentum. Why throw that away with a stupid distraction? Some self-control is needed IMO.

Russia interfered in a US election, that is not in dispute by anyone except the craziest of rightwingers. That needs to be investigated, along with all the threads of incredibly suspicious-looking activity involving ALL things Russia where Trump&Co are concerns.

Now, if these crooks somehow get off the hook for that, then I think we're all going to take to the streets with torches.

But Kathy? Meh, I normally think she's (occasionally) really funny, but she needs to stop acting like a blameless victim, and --worse-- giving Trump something to be a victim about (that's Trump's schtick; and I say let HIM have it because shows how weak and pathetic he really is).

I hear the opposition is already using Kathy in ads against Dem candidates. Excuse me if I don't feel like supporting her right now.

Official removal of trump's portrait to one of the bathrooms in the building. Hang his likeness above a toilet. Or maybe where the White House chef and kitchen staffers dump the garbage.

I stand with Kathy Griffin. SOLIDLY. A friend of mine is all overheated about it. She doesn't see ANY double standard effect operating here. I've been reminding her that - as soon as Ted Nugget has to face consequences for all the death threats he's made against President Obama and Hillary Clinton, then we've got something to talk about.

She has always been brazenly honest about calling out celebrity bullshit. 45 is a celebrity reality show host.

She made a miscalculation, but she didn't shy from showing her face in the picture, unlike the people who take pictures of Obama effigies. She realized it was misguided, apologized, and took her lumps from CNN. When has 45 ever taken responsibility for the dangerous statements he makes?

I heard that this was an improvised idea by the photographer. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't like "Hey you wanna hold this fake Trump head?" And she went "Hell yeah, sure!" Click click click. I doubt it was even an exceedingly plotted thing.

She didn't harm anyone for real, and she owned up for her gaffe. All this invective needs to go to the guy who actually sliced people's throats in the name of "free speech".

Jun 2017

Humans make mistakes. Humble humans admit it.

If you can admit you made a mistake, then I will forgive you.

Take note. Kathy does crass humor for a living. If she had done the same thing 8 years ago with a head of Obama, all the people complaining today would have been cheering. But, those of us with a conscience would have said the same thing then as we are today. The joke was too much, so just apologize and move on.

Kathy's joke about Trump is NOT the problem today. It's a distraction. The problem was and is Trump and his behavior. He's a horrible blemish on our country who is actually using his 10-year-old child as a shield! That's disgusting. Nothing Kathy did comes close to the horrendous behavior of Trump.

Finally, Democrats criticizing Kathy need to back off. You've said your peace. Continuing to do so just helps Trump and empowers his supporters. Remember, her joke was a criticism of Trump. She's on our side. A course correction is all that is required and she has done that. Now, get back to what is important.

We're all aware of the horrific things Ted Nugent and the right said, but rightly or wrongly, the visceral impact of holding a bloody, severed head is higher. Someone on the right with mainstream media contracts would have lost them if they'd done that with Obama's head. The difference is that Obama wouldn't have been tweeting about it to rile up/distract his base.

I think if she's smart, Kathy Griffin will go quiet for a while and fade to the background. Then four months from now, after endless Trump insanity has elapsed, Bill Maher and others will be eager to have her as a guest to comment on it and the death threats, et al that she experienced. I don't see why she can't have a comeback after a hiatus, her audience is liberal anyway.

But, I hope she gets out of the media for now, because she's a distraction that the right is fundraising off of and using to their advantage.

New Year's Eve with Anderson Cooper. BUT...

We have freedom of expression in this country. While I think her Trump head was a bit over the top, it doesn't hold a candle to all the years that Obama was lynched in effigy, gorilla faces were photoshopped onto Michelle, Barack dressed as a witch doctor and on and on...and nobody got fired, nobody got death threats, everyone on the right just sort of snickered up their collective sleeves. But let someone got a little over the line with Trump and look out the orange shitgibbon widdle feelings were hurt so go try and destroy someone.

I really don't like my country much any more. If I weren't so damn old, I would be seriously considering emigrating.

But if some here are fine with wallowing with the RW, then dont complain about what THEY do.

here on DU trump is ruining America. the RW thought the same about Obama. it doesnt matter if gay marriage really ISNT destroying the country, to them it was, so they thought it fine to blast the Pres. with nasty crap
The left shouldnt stoop to their level because then it no longer matters who is doing the disrespecting of the office of the president. Cracking jokes or making memes is one thing, but I'm seeing a lot of stuff that is as nasty or nastier than what they did for 8 yrs. Any rumor about trump is taken as fact, just like they did with obama. Melania was a prostitute, donald likes to be peed on, etc. NO actual evidence to support it, but repeated here as fact. That shit needs to stop. there is enough ACTUAL serious shit that needs to be focused on. All this other stuff does is give ammo to them to say "See, look how awful they are"

Perhaps she could have chosen a different method that didn't remind people of ISIS, but the point is valid.

144. I need the support of fellow liberals right now. I feel lousy.

I kind of went off on a friend's FB post about this subject. She'd posted a fox spews Spittle Attack at Kathy. Because she's getting what she deserves, heh heh, you hear what I'm sayin?

My friend, who I like a lot, was pretty gracious about it. But she used the well known, "America is great because we all get to have our opinions." reply.
Sigh, I went into another lecture, briefly. Thank Dawg.

I so wish I had your words for it. Would've been better all around.

Trump has fostered the hate in this country. She just acted on it, albeit unthinkingly.

148. I came across

someone named Julie Borowski (aka. Token Libertarian Girl) on YouTube who said in one of her videos that we (liberals) are basically hypocrites for defending KG on this. RWers like her more than likely had no problems with when there were far worse things said and done against Obama. I don't condone what KG did, but this is weak sauce compared to the racist threats Obama received on a daily basis. I also had to laugh when Ted Nugent claimed recently that he never threatened Obama, which is a flat out lie ("dead or in jail", anyone?) While Democrats have their careers ended and are forced to apologize, Republicans can just do whatever evil and nasty stuff they want to (whether it's suggesting presidents or body slamming reporters), and people such as Token Libertarian Girl will look the other way, thus allowing them to avoid trouble for the most part.

Don't worry, CNN will regret their stupidity since some of us won't be watching it anymore.

172. I've always found her a bit annoying, but she screwed up by appologizing

Obviously, it was just some dark humor. Trump has encouraged violence at his rallies. Kathy should have said that it was in response to that instead of apologizing. She could have taken a cue from Stephen Colbert: don't apologize and keep fighting.

173. Not a wise decision by her but such a bloody double standard!

When a liberal goes "too far" they are made to prostrate themselves and beg for forgiveness publicly, and usually lose a job or work. One that pops into my head is Van Jones calling Republicans assholes.

180. If this were a little known performance artist making an artistic/political statement...

then there would probably be more people standing up for their right of free speech and freedom of expression, but since it is only a successful comedienne seeking attention, it makes it easy for even liberals to enter into the hatefest.

181. I don't think liberals are hating on her, so much as agreeing that it was stupid & counterproductive

It must have taken a while to mock up that head. This wasn't a live performance where she got carried away and made an unwise choice. There was time to reflect on what the impact of this would be and I don't think how it played out was that hard to foresee.

I agree that an unknown performance artist wouldn't have taken such a hit and would probably have even built their name among supporters.

Mark my words, in less than 12 months that photo of Kathy Griffin holding up Trump's head as if she were Salome will be featured on T-shirts and thousands of men and women will be wearing them.
