but they weren't happy with their catch so they took the BMW's, Benz's, Audi's and Jaguar's. Pretty soon, the Corvette's were gone too. By then everyone drove little jelly beans that looked like their neighbors. And it was deemed good.
But then, in the middle of the night in the distance came a roar. Some nights it lasted for hours. The CO2 sensors went off the charts, but by the time the eco police arrived, all that were left were tire tracks and wine bags (cans and bottles long since gone the way of the outdoor barbecue).
Not in my lifetime. Let the exhaust pipes scream.

(10,004 posts)This is a new tech Audi Quattro 20V drivetrain and suspension on a tube chassis. Paul Tinguad (dirver, owner, rally car builder by day) calls those ridiculous exhausts "grapefruit shooters". In the hillcrimb world, he is reknowned for his wrench skills and his take no prisoners driving style.

You'll still be able to drive the old gas guzzlers on private race tracks and deserted old country roads.
BTW: AFAIK Porsche and Ferrari are developing hybrid engines, not just to reduce fuel consumption but it can also improve performance in some ways.

(10,164 posts)...it's that however much torque an electric motor makes, it makes at all RPM. You have the motor's full torque output over its full range of operation. This means that until an internal combustion engine spins up to fairly high RPM, a reasonably equivalent electric motor (in terms of power output) will have a lot more torque.

The Audi R8 e-tron is powered by a 375 horsepower electric drive system and a 49 KWh lithium-ion battery pack that gives it a range up to 133 miles on a single charge. The world record for the R8 e-tron follows Audis win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Audi R18 e-tron quattro the first overall victory for a hybrid-electric vehicle in the toughest race in the world.

The SUV haters will hate this car because it isn't covered with solar cells. 133 miles is OK if you're grannying, but a super car is a super car.
