TAMPA --
A Seminole Heights pastor is recovering after a tree fell on her while she was praying.
Sharon Davis, the pastor of Seminole Heights United Methodist Church, had just finished her nightly walk on Sunday when she stopped to sit on the church stairs to reflect and pray.
"The tree fell and covered the stairs and we could hear her scream," said Jordan Miller, who was working at his bike shop across the street from the church. "We saw her down on the ground, and that's when we realized what happened."
Miller's girlfriend called 911 while he and several other people nearby rushed over to help.

(20,317 posts)The headline for this story is a lot more sensational than the actual event, it seems to me. The image conjured from the headline is one of a pastor struck down by an 'act of god', mid-sermon, which is a pretty funny image. This just sounds like a woman sitting on a bench who had a tree fall on her.

(2,231 posts)Just consider the following scenario. As I write this I am thinking it.
She recovers and heals and understands that the tree falling was natures way of expressing, "We're killing ourselves here!" and becomes the face/voice/icon that wakes everybody UP and we return to being stewards of the planet, not owners. Planet harm should be the biggest offense and the punishment would be that you had to spend as long as it took you to understand with experts in the eco system you played a part in destroying.

(17,651 posts)But for some reason my mind went straight to a quote from the movie "Signs".
Graham Hess: People break down into two groups. When they experience something lucky, group number one sees it as more than luck, more than coincidence. They see it as a sign, evidence, that there is someone up there, watching out for them. Group number two sees it as just pure luck. Just a happy turn of chance. I'm sure the people in group number two are looking at those fourteen lights in a very suspicious way. For them, the situation is a fifty-fifty. Could be bad, could be good. But deep down, they feel that whatever happens, they're on their own. And that fills them with fear. Yeah, there are those people. But there's a whole lot of people in group number one. When they see those fourteen lights, they're looking at a miracle. And deep down, they feel that whatever's going to happen, there will be someone there to help them. And that fills them with hope. See what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you? Are you the kind that sees signs, that sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky? Or, look at the question this way: Is it possible that there are no coincidences?
Again, glad she survived....
