The partys unity tour reopened wounds from the primary.
By Daniel Marans
WASHINGTON ― National reproductive rights groups counted it as a major victory last week when the Democratic National Committee doubled down on its commitment to abortion rights amid anger at its support for Heath Mello, an anti-abortion candidate for mayor of Omaha, Nebraska.
But the groups pointed criticism of DNC chair Tom Perez, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) for embracing Mello sparked a bitter public debate about the Democratic Partys values ― one that continues to simmer, overshadowing the large crowds the party drew on its cross-country tour and muddying efforts to present a united front against President Donald Trump.
Now even the DNC is clarifying that it never meant to suggest it would not back Mello or other anti-abortion Democrats.
Tom does not believe in litmus tests and he never said that he didnt support pro-life candidates, a DNC official told HuffPost.

(2,192 posts)As long as they get elected in the name of "at least it's a Democrat," we'll suffer with more Democrats in Name Only.
No one is free if they don't have control over their own body.

(4,158 posts)As I never plan to live ANYWHERE that would force me to "hold my nose" & vote.
And strangely as a gay man, the physical act of abortion isn't something that affects me, but I find this assault on a woman's PERSONAL choice and PERSONAL, PHYSICAL BODY absolutely reprehensible. It is an assault, a physical violation in that many of these appalling states require all kinds of ridiculous hoops for these poor women to jump through in order to conduct a PRIVATE MEDICAL PROCEDURE.
As an RN, I am outraged that ANYBODY would think they could make medical decisions for somebody else without their permission. And lastly, just to say it --these people are FUCKING STUPID.
My grandmother lived to be 102-years-old. She normally would have never repeated this to us, but she became charmingly demented around 99. She was STAUNCH pro-choice always. She almost never failed to repeat this at the dinner table (especially when my brother and I sort of egged it on), "I just don't see why all these Republicans are so obsessed about a fetus. I had three miscarriages, and they didn't look like anything more than a piece of liver from a small chicken!"

(34,139 posts)When they call asking for money. I've been telling them for years that they do not support liberal enough candidates.
Now I will add that as long as the Democratic Party does not make pro-choice a criteria for the candidates they support, they will not see a penny from me. Since they don't seem to value women's choices to control their own bodies, I can not trust the DNC at all.
