I know we spend twice as much as anyone else. But, is it really the best? I am just wondering if my fellow DUers believe this.

(1,448 posts)We have to go to work to pass Canada (#30), as matter of intra-continental pride. Our immediate objective is not to fall below Slovenia (#38) as we try to move past Costa Rica (#36). Our progress is slowed by Sen. Mitch, who thinks USA is #1. For him, sucking that Federal sponsored healthcare insurance, he has reason to believe that. Little .hope that we will ever over take France (#1)

But, the World Health Organization rates France, Italy, Germany and 36 others way ahead of us over all. UK, Japan, Sweden I understand, but Morocco and Costa Rica?

(22,308 posts)Yes, Saudi Princes come here for care because we have the best care in the world.
If you are just an average American citizen the system is not so good. The cost system is broken, the care itself is exceptional.

Organizational (costs, access, etc.), it isn't.

(1,241 posts)They are curing neuropathy in many countries with stem cell treatment. All my doctor offers me is buckets full of opiates. A drug that has been used for 5000 years is the only thing American medical care gets me. Pretty primative. I think American doctors are just drug dealers, first priority.

(11,541 posts)Here, in UHC Canada, there also are deficiencies in the system, and the pharmaceutical lobbies are also very pro-active.
It's not perfect by any means, but it is accessible, depending on conditions other than financial, be it for emergencies or not.
Best luck to you.

(11,541 posts)And the right-wingers are slowly creating a "2-speeds" system.
Public (for all) = "prioritized" waiting lists.
PRIVATE ("new" - "parallel" - for the rich and/or the privately insured) = "anytime" as needed...

(26,219 posts)From a technology/training perspective.
Unfortunately, the McConnell class doesn't take into account affordability, so while the system is top notch, few can actually afford to use it and of those who do, many end up in bankruptcy due to the profit motivations of those who will deny breast cancer treatment for a 40 year old because she had a yeast infection when she was 28.

(6,271 posts)Frightening thing is, so do Cubans. They spend like a tiny fraction of what we spend.
Of course perhaps you can't completely trust Cuban statistics.

(32,099 posts)I'm one of millions who are on the "Hope I don't get sick or injured" plan. If he gets sick he gets the care of the best doctors money can buy, and doesn't have to worry about losing his home and everything else he owns.. We on the "Hope I don't get sick" plan hope that we can find some over-the-counter medication, or something in the first aid kit to fix whatever ails us. And, if not, we get to say "hello" to bankruptcy. I hope one of these days, Mitch McConnell gets to endure the very shit he thinks is just fine for 30 million of his fellow countrymen. Fuck him.

(18,186 posts)but having been uninsured for quite some time I would not know.
Richie Mitch wants us all to pretend - as he does - that we Americans all live in one nation.
We don't.
Ritchie Mitch gets government-subsidized health care - the cream of the crop of health care plans.
I get nothing so he can have his.
We live in two different countries.
And only one of us thinks that's wrong.
