So backup cameras on cars mandatory starting May 2018?

Wonder why?

On March 31, 2014, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it would require all automobiles sold in the United States built beginning in May 2018 to include backup cameras. On October 31, 2016, Transport Canada issued a similar mandate beginning at the same time.

Now imagine if a Trumpster was in charge of this department, think they would require auto mfgs do ANYTHING at all?

1. So the cost of cars will get even more expensive

Great, another mandatory feature making my next vehicle even more expensive than it already is.

My last new car had it as an option that I declined because I didn't need it and didn't want to pay for it. Now I will be forced to.

7. By what? A little over $100. I have one in my minivan, and I find it invaluable in parking lots.

.

Most new cars are already being installed with touch screen entertainment systems, this would just be a plug in.

and why we WONT have them if people stay home on election day or vote 3rd party

this is the same thing - we take so much for granted, we ASSUME what is there today will be there tomorrow

Just list anything, like lawsuits.

We will soon see the return of tetraethyl lead in gas and asbestos brake linings, so there's that.

To come out and say asbestos is good for you and saves a lot of lives if you are in a fire. And lead just weighs down the carbon monoxide so we don't have to worry about it being in the air.

I find it invaluable. Love it. Would not buy another car without it.

Used to require 2 people or multiple in-and-outs of the truck.

Now I just back the hitch right under.

And parking is so easy.

11. In terms of recent automotive innovations (most of which are useless), they are actually helpful.

Can't stand stupid things like push button starts being foisted on us as "new and improved" but I have to say the backup cameras are an actual useful innovation.

My parent's house has a narrow driveway that's a pain to back out of, but the cameras make it a much easier experience. Even my dad--who's more adverse to bells and whistles on cars than I am--has said the camera on his new car has been a good thing.
