Nearing 100 days, Trump's approval at record lows but his base is holding

By Dan Balz and Scott Clement April 23 at 12:01 AM

President Trump nears the 100-day mark of his administration as the least popular chief executive in modern times, a president whose voters remain largely satisfied with his performance, but one whose base of support has not expanded since he took the oath of office, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Trump’s first months in office have produced some tangible successes. Beyond the continued enthusiasm of his most loyal supporters, a small majority of Americans see him as a strong leader. A bigger majority approves of his efforts to pressure U.S. companies to keep jobs in this country. Those who say the economy is getting better outnumber those who say it’s getting worse by the biggest margin in 15 years in Post-ABC polling.

But the president’s balance sheet overall tilts toward the negative. Majorities of Americans say Trump has not accomplished much during his first months as president. Meanwhile, he shows little improvement on his temperament and honesty, and while he’s gained ground on empathy, over 6 in 10 still say he does not understand the problems of people like them.

With a week remaining before his 100th day in office, Trump has yet to achieve a major legislative accomplishment, having been dealt a major setback when Republicans in Congress decided not to proceed with a vote on a health-care bill supported by the White House. His clearest achievement is the successful nomination of Neil M. Gorsuch to the Supreme Court seat previously held by conservative Justice Antonin Scalia.

It's because Trump, like their form of religion, is based on mindless faith and mindless hope.

You can show them contrary evidence. You can employ reason to argue your case. And you will have wasted your time as far as persuading them to change their opinions.

Same mindset for their church translates into believing in Trump. To paraphrase "Miracle on 34th Street": Faith is believing when common sense tells you not to.

Until they are personally affected, they'll believe everything is peachy.

If Trump is still around in October, they will begin to see the economy crumble. This time of year construction jobs will be created, and people will think things are 'turning around.' As soon as the weather starts getting cold, the stock market will crash and doubts about Trump's competence will begin to emerge.

His supporters are sharing recipes on Facebook, confident that he's doing good because they heard that the stock market went up. That won't last forever.

You know, the people who pay no attention to leadership and current events, but feel fine just knowing it's a Republican President and not a Democrat. Once that conclusion is met, there is no need to scrutinize their performance.

Conversely, if a Democrat is in the White House, no amount of good governance will ever gain credence for them. They are perpetually angered and vociferous and will do anything to supplant said Democrat.

It's an abdication of patriotic duty, performed by the faux patriots of the USA.

tRump needs support outside his base to be effective. He didn't "win" the election due to a base that will always vote R. He "won" because enough Is and Ds crossed over and voted for him in states that typically vote blue.

If he is losing support with these non-R voters, he's toast.
