Well, there's no such legitimate thing as the "prosperity gospel." Jesus was a POOR GUY. Jesus didn't own a home. He didn't even rent one. Everything we're taught about Him says He was homeless. Surviving on friends, cousins, followers, and fans. He was nomadic - walking His way from one end of Biblical-era Israel to another. Staying with friends, preaching in town squares - not some fancy offices or edifice. We're taught He wore a garment hand-woven by His mother - nothing he bought or had made or fitted. He didn't have much - except, literally, for the clothes on His back.

AND "worse," He hung out with the riffraff. Those people the "better" classes walked by without even looking at them. The sick, the outcast, people with leprosy, men with "bad" reputations, women with "bad" reputations, guys who collected taxes - whom we were taught were reviled by others in "polite society".

When the rich young man asked how he could join up, as you've pointed out, paleotn, indeed Jesus told him to sell everything he owned, give the proceeds to the poor, and come follow Him. How the story ended: the rich young ma went away. With sadness. Sad.

And yet, I'm also reminded about the Kansas district that was up for grabs a few weeks ago. We lost (again). But we lost by a remarkably small margin, considering how easy a free pass all things republi-CON had enjoyed there in the past. The DNC didn't bother with that one, either. What if they had? I've heard the speculation that if there'd been greater and more prominent support there, and the DNC had made it a priority, we could have narrowed that already surprisingly narrow gap all the way to the winner's circle.

There are FAR too many districts and even states - where the Dems haven't bothered to put up even a small fight. Just wrote it off, from the get-go. Without even blinking. Howard Dean complained about that before he was DNC chair. He talked repeatedly about visiting some of these districts in enemy territory and hearing from Democrats who were, politically-speaking, starving. STARVING! Starving for support, attention, ANY kind of assistance or backing. They were abandoned. And he described how they complained to him - they'd asked, begged, called, sent and left messages, pleaded - for some support. They'd tell him "Hey! We're here too! We've got Democrats here. Right HERE! NEEDING your help! PLEASE!!! We could even win this if we ONLY had some support! We NEED the resources!!! PLEASE!!!" And these people were just ignored. Their needs and their pleas just blown off. No, we have to focus on the "battleground states."

Well, SCREW THAT!!! That's SPECTACULARLY IDIOTIC! EVERY state is a battleground state. And Democrats should run somebody in EVERY election! How many of those seats in the state legislatures and even Congress - where no Democrats bothered even trying to run? The CON ran unopposed. Or maybe a Peace & Freedom party ran or some such odd-man-out. But there were no Democrats on the ballot. Those Democrats in those places didn't even have a choice! They weren't just not represented, they didn't even have anybody in the running to TRY to represent them, or at least bring THEIR concerns into the campaign and then the voting booth!

THAT'S what has to stop. THAT'S what I hope is changing. It is a political mortal sin to leave seats and opposing party candidates unopposed. A MORTAL SIN! To say "You should get a better job" is to say that job and business shouldn't exist, in the first place. Because if "Bob" gets a better job, SOMEONE ELSE will then have that job, and will have the SAME ISSUE.

Let's say Bob is a mechanic in a mid-size city. Those mechanic shops don't provide insurance because they can't afford to. So Bob finally gets a job at a retail place making less money but with insurance benefits. Good for Bob. But that mechanic shop NEEDS a mechanic and still can't afford to provide insurance, so someone else will take Bob's job. That someone else, then, will not have insurance or make enough money to buy it.

And so the cycle goes. Can you imagine what the economy would be if all small businesses shut down because they can't afford to provide health care?

What this politician REALLY believes is: I don't care about people w/o insurance; they must be deadbeats; my money is my money and I get to keep it all and don't owe anything to the country or society that allowed me to make my money; I don't even know anyone who works at jobs like that, so I can't relate at all; everyone should be like me and mine - rich. He's right. Time after time, right here on DU, I've read posts declaring food service jobs as jobs meant for school aged children with no skills and that a decent wage with benefits is undeserved. This is, of course, is hogwash. Restaurants are open during school hours and late nights when school aged people are usually unable to work. As a cook in 1980, I was paid as much as I was paid for hanging drywall and packing shingles and was able to afford my own apartment and the associated costs of providing for myself. These places are and have been staffed by adults with real skills, talent and knowledge of food borne illnesses and how to prevent them.

But screw 'em. No, these jobs can be filled by anyone according to supposed liberals right here on this board so it's not surprising to hear the exact same thing coming from a GOPee-er.
