So, there's an Olympics this year?

Okay, I knew the Olympics are happening, but is it just me, or does it seem like a non-event this year? The Olympic Games usually seems to be preceded by a constant barrage of advertising hype...this year I think I see more ads for Swiffer mops and pet food. Are the Brits really into it? Isn't the Queen Mum putting up a few bucks? Why do the games seem to be so low-key this year, even as they're mounting anti-aircraft guns on rooftops and positions snipers all over town?

Or maybe that's the answer?

The Brits simply don't have enough money -- even if they hocked the Royal jewels -- to try to match China's World Power coming-out party in '08.

Because while China put a lot of power into it, a lot of that backfired horribly. It only put the spotlight on smog air, dissident crackdowns, and the fact that , sadly, Chinese culture gets no respect. England will be the ones looked at as the savior, with the rock and roll, the BBC.

But, Carnaby Street and the British Tele haven't been the same since Ready, Steady, Go! was cancelled.

Respendent in all her looted diamonds, and the kids are comely, but I'm afraid Britannia today is dottering, arthritic and largely irrelevant. Increasingly, so are we. But you can dream of the halcyon days of yore when side-by-side, we stepped together across the face the world...

I know we're promoting it a lot here. All of the NBC stations are. Plus all of the NBC Universal stations - MSNBC, SyFy, USA, E!, CNBC, NBC Sports Network, etc.

We are only 24 days away from the opening ceremony!! I can't wait!

The trials are on all NBC affiliates, I see nonstop Michael Phelps ads, there's a Morgan Freeman-narrated ad for one of the guys in track and field...they're everywhere.

I'd argue that the only Olympics that truly snuck up on me was Vancouver 2010. I completely forgot until the day of the opening ceremonies.

Coca Cola has special edition Olympics cans, and has been advertising them on TV. Proctor & Gamble has ads in magazines, coupon inserts, at the grocery store checkout counter, etc. And, they have been running ads featuring athletes and their mothers. Visa has also been running commercials, and IIRC, one of the car companies has as, well.

It's that CBC no longer has Olympic coverage. Living 15-20 from the Detroit-Windsor border meant you got to see events live as they happened( didn't have to wait until NBC's prime time coverage started) plus they did a better job than NBC.
