(16,254 posts)We hurt the Koch bros. with boycotts, so I hope we can make an impression on Exxon, as well.
I cannot believe they are doing this in-your-face request as though they are clean and trusted. Obama laid some groundwork to block them from drilling such a pristine area, as I recall, but they've sure increased their target and will forever change the environment in that area.
I hate it that my disgust of this entire crew keeps growing. I don't like to be that way, but the administration has totally changed my personality. I need to work on getting some of it back before I go mad.

(16,254 posts)Unfortunately, some of them are favorites, so I had to change habits and buy other products. I realize Exxon is petroleum-related, but was hoping there were other entities we could boycott. I don't think we have any Exxon stations around here. I'm still boycotting BP.

(58,785 posts)but I bet others here do if they look into it.
The 2017 annual shareholders' meeting is coming up fast, on May 31 at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas. And of course, one need not be a shareholder to demonstrate outside.
However, each year climate activists try to get elected to the board of directors, and helping with that is something anyone who happens to own a voting share could do.

(8,397 posts)but you will not hurt ExxonMobil. First, much of its profits are derived overseas. Second, it sells refined products to many other outlets.
If the demand for gasoline products is X, people boycotting move away from Exxon or Mobil stations but the demand remains X, and people will purchase gasoline at other stations. Those other stations will get their product from ExxonMobil refining and supply. The only thing special about Exxon gasoline is their special blend of additives, which are not manufactured by ExxonMobil, but are purchased from a third party and distributed at the loading rack.
So, gasoline refined by ExxonMobil goes to a loading rack where additive is blended for ExxonMobil or Shell or BP, or Jim's Off-Brand Service Station etc. Since no one is building new refineries, those other companies will simply use ExxonMobil refined products. Demand is still X and off-brand gas stations still use ExxonMobil products.
