Hell has officially frozen over...

I was walking the dogs this morning and ran into one of my crazy Trump loving neighbors. He is ex military and now works at Tinker Air Force Base. During the election he had 4 Trump signs in his yard and every time he ran into one of us he gave us grief about voting for Mrs. Clinton.

This morning he stopped me, he had a very serious look on his face when he said "I'm sorry for giving you guys a hard time about Clinton".....I took in my breath and said, "everyone is entitled to their opinion"he then said, "this guy scares the crap out of me". I almost fell over, I told him that I was scared as well but I have to trust that the Congress won't let him do anything stupid. His response, was "I sure hope you are right".

I mean this, if this guy has turned on Trump there is hope...

Each of these people with buyer's remorse has to be handled individually. I know a few. They are very quiet right now, but may go into the voting booth and vote for Democrats. Those I know would never pull a Democratic ballot in the primary, but the general is another matter.

Sat Apr 15, 2017, 03:31 PM
Apr 2017

There were countless lawsuits and other pieces of evidence that he was no friend to the common, working, middle class American and yet they still voted for him by the millions. Even since Inauguration Day, he has proven to be on the side of the wealthy and not on the side of regular Americans. I just don't get it.

And the biggest mystery is the near unanimous support he enjoys from evangelicals even though he is the most immoral, ungodly and least religious man ever elected president. The mind boggles as to why.

And while I don't understand why evangelical leaders threw their support behind him (I agree, that is absolutely mindboggling), I understand why the sheep in their flocks did. To do other than they were told to do would have been disobedient and un-Christian.

66. On the surface it seems preposterous
Sat Apr 15, 2017, 04:14 PM
Apr 2017

But its all a perfect storm.

1.The MSM did a horrible job at highlighting those lawsuits, the stiffing of small businesses, the scandals involving shutting out black tenants, his own destruction of emails that the courts had ordered him to submit, his bankruptcies, etc

2. The MSM again for a separate point, in their coverage of Hillary. Pretty near every time she was mentioned, or a campaign guest was on, it was all about her email server use. I don't remember any segment spending the majority of time discussing her policy proposals. Other than the last couple of weeks, the MSM were desperate to spread the evil out. To balance the horse race as much as they could by dragging her down and making them both flawed to a degree. The difference was the MSM were leading that push against Hillary while allowing the Trump campaign to be the pushers, if you will, of his narrative - simply because every day he wrote the headlines from yet another outrageous line or deed and they just ran behind him.

3. The decades long vast right wing conspiracy against what were the two brightest stars to come out of the Democratic party for a long time; Bill and Hillary Clinton. I had issues with how they steered the party right, but the fact is the GOP were envious of their popularity and afraid of their influence. Meanwhile Clearchannel buys up all the daytime talk radio stations and only puts on RW hate jocks that carefully crafted a demon figure based solely on conspiracy theories based on invention. After a couple of decades of this brainwashing, it made folks froth at the mouth at the thought of Hillary as President.

4. Being on the side of the wealthy means something to those fighting from the left, but has been crafted to be seen as a bonus to many on the right. The false base of the belief that a wealthy person in charge, a successful businessman, will make everybody wealthy too. And so they don't want their future rich selves to have to pay half their earnings to pay for the lazy poor.

5. The mystery of the (I think) 80% Evangelical support. Its mostly about abortion. And to some degree gay marriage. And also watching pot be legalized. They hear every week from their pastors about the end of the world and sin taking over America with issues such as those. They know Trump promised to appoint a SCOTUS judge that will deny women's access to abortion. One wonders if Obama had managed to appoint Merrick Garland, and there was no hope for that particular wish to succeed, if they would have shown up to the polls much. Many were a one issue voter. They happily wore blinders to block out any and all 'locker room behaviour' as long as he answered their prayers and God used him to save unborn babies.

6. Trump in part created it, but it became the 'anti-establishment' election. And Trump won that award going away. Which is baffling as you say. But middle America defined 'establishment' as Washington politicians, especially Democratic ones. While Democrats, most notably those in the Bernie camp, defined 'establishment' as assholes like Trump and even bigger crooks up the chain. The ones that are holding the puppet strings on those Washington politicians.

has developed a conviction among those conservatives prone to it that anything else must be better, and that they could never hit bottom because that's on the other side of us.

Hillary Clinton was made the symbol of, a focus for hyperpartisan hate by the anti-tax/anti-regulation corporatists to defeat Democrats, liberalism, progressive government. Thus it seems to me that the mountain of lies conservative voters swallowed about her is both both their fortress wall of belief and their weak point.

After all, Hillary is the most scrutinized, spied upon, and investigated person in modern history by far. A quarter century of investigations have always found her innocent of all legal charges. All claims of genuine, serious breeches of ethics are unfounded. If the nation comes to see her more as she really is, a normal person, that fortress will crack open.

Of course it's a terrible mistake to push anyone to change his mind, but staying silent is problematic also.

Rump's administration is revving back up the ol' profit mill on student loan. This is news, and any discussion could include that the Democrats/Hillary still plan to stop profiteering from student loans, effectively a huge, incredibly stupid tax on higher education. That we still plan to make college affordable once again.

Apr 2017

Oh MAN did you nail it, FakeNoose.

Hey, there isn't anyone who more ardently and ragingly wants to scream at those who voted for him - more than I do. One part of me wants them punished, facing consequences for an actively-taken, deliberate "I'm-mad-and-I'm-lashing-out-and-so-fuck-YOU" bad decision. Because you're angry. For Pete's sake, aren't we all, for one reason or another? But SHEESH, in many workplaces, a judgment call already proving disastrous, needlessly costly, and potentially catastrophic if not treasonous, that would be dismissible behavior (doing something bad enough to get you fired). And if YOU voluntarily chose that - especially when the truth was readily available to disprove it all - well, let's just say I have little patience or sympathy for self-inflicted wounds.

But my better self knows that I can't be a hard-ass, especially with deep wounds that are just barely starting to heal. It says a lot about the trump-supporter in the OP, who A) realized he got it wrong, B) accepted it, and C) attempted to make some amends by apologizing to you. That's a very difficult bridge to cross, particularly when you have long been heavily and emotionally invested in one viewpoint. To have your eyes opened - to finally see the unprecedented mess this spectacularly ignorant and sociopathic imposter has created before he's even hit the 100-day mark. This fellow, I bet, is one of those. This is a true grownup. One recognizing and accepting un-spun/unfiltered reality. This awakening awareness needs to be nurtured and handled with care, like a tiny baby shoot pushing up from underground into the sunlight for the first time. Tiny and tender and vulnerable now, but one day it might be a tree!

And you're so right that it's hard for people to admit they were wrong. Worse when it can also mean they were had. Nobody wants to admit they fell for the lies and the slick talk and the "populist" schtick. So we've gotta go easy on folks like these. Extra points and positive reinforcement. Smooth the way for this transitional thinking (an epiphany, if you will indulge my sudden urge to use religious terms). Folks like these can renew one's faith and provide new reasons to hope. They prove redemption is possible and is a real thing. Hah! A nice realization on Easter weekend, 'eh?

from college - it was during the Vietnam war late 60s. I lost track of her for about 20 years; found her again and she had married a R who turned her into a FAUX news watcher. We had to agree to never talk politics if we were going to remain friends. It was my intro to realizing they truly do live in a parallel universe with alternative facts and logic. It was shocking and horrifying, and I tried talking to her, but there literally is no point of intersection.

What you said about it being like different species...that is right. I have a lot of experience with people with very limited English and find communicating with them much easier; I can find common ground even with those from different cultures and limited English, but it's very hard to find common ground with those from the FAUX world. But like the OP said, if this guy has turned on Trump...maybe there is hope.

If you help them see the con, they can avoid RepubliCON lies later and be more likely to vote Democratic.

We could see tRump say both sides of issues BEFORE the election and so could they but they ignored it. For example he said NATO was obsolete and he said he'd support it.

We could see that tRump didn't pay his bills and shafted small contractors.

We could hear when tRump's family values ("grab her pussy", "sexual disease was my own Vietnam&quot were on full display before the election.

Especially for military, help them see that they overlooked the obvious: tRump's fake medical draft deferments, his statements that the Generals are stupid, and his overwhelming ignorance of his own monumental ignorance and his unwillingness to study or learn.

You "trust that the Congress won't let him do anything stupid"?

You have more faith than I do with the deplorables who never blinked over throwing 24-million off their health care and racking up another Trillion in debt in the process? The forever-angry, paranoid, racists weasels who love the chaos and just want to watch the world burn?

And since he was a hard core Trump supporter, he will be on record as a Republican voter whose voice matters to Republican congress members. That will count more than any dozen Democratic voters contacting them since Republican congress critters know we will never donate to them or vote for them.

The people showing up for the town halls are making an impact on many of these representatives - if those numbers are supplemented by historically Republican voters pushing against what Trump is doing, that will pound them more.

there is nothing to be gained from I told you so-ing these people and you did the right thin, double thumbs up. However, nothing short of voting for Democrats next year then again in 2020 and forever forward with absolve them from doing this bullshit to us in the first place. Perhaps if they do this it will bring some humility and sanity to the Republican political collective.

The title Senator can be used before someone who once was Senator. This is just like President. The common reason is you are elected into it. Contrary to usage - as you read Secretary Powell, Secretary Albright decades after leaving office - only the current person is supposed to be called SoS.

However, both Secretary Kerry and Secretary Clinton seem more "normal" - though I would have preferred President in both cases!

I met him with lots of the DU JK people. I was surprised at how serious and focused he was and how intensely committed he was to environmental and peace issues. However, we also saw that there was clearly also a "fun" side of him, especially when his wife was speaking to us. ( This was before their book on the environment was released.)

I think what might have surprised people had he become President at that funnier side and how much an idealist he is and how nice a person he is. Not to mention, we would have gotten to know Teresa, who is incredible better.

Great story. I hope there are many others like this one as time passes and Trump deteriorates. I actually have more hope that Republicans will regret being anti-Hillary than I do for some die hard Bernie Sanders supporters. There is still a lot of Hillary hate on the Left. If we want to be the strongest and most effective politically, we are going to have to be united.

I am reading a book that just came out, "The Destruction of Hillary Clinton" by Susan Bordo. There have been a few on-line articles about the book and some of the comments from Sander's supporters are so hateful...I think most of them have actually not even opened the pages of the book and are just reacting to some reviews and social media. I recommend the book, whether you were a Clinton supporter or not. There is much to learn and shows where we as Democrats need to counter the RW hate machine that unfortunately, our youngest voters have bought into and pulled into the Left of our Party.

What happened to Hillary Clinton has happened to a degree to other Democrats but not to this extreme and the Left's hatred of her is disturbing. I expect a conservative mindset to hate Hillary Clinton, it is disconcerting when it comes from so-called Progressives. I am not sure where it leaves us. Really, as Democrats hoping to gain the Senate back and I hope the WH in 2020 we can not risk having the candidate destroyed with the help of our own Party.

I too am sick of the continued Hillary hate-fest from Progressives. She's done so much for so many and all it really takes is a couple hours and a serious look at her background to see this. At the very least take one of those "lies" from the 13 min of lies video and see why she changed her mind. There were those that complained that she should shift to the left and when she did they called her a "flip-flopper". There was no winning. It was like a political 'Mean Girls' .

I thought he would have turned against Trump sooner, but I guess an extra five weeks to come to terms with the awful truth is not unreasonable.

This is someone who came to Trump from the left, more or less. He hates neocons, and includes Hillary in that category. He thinks the Russia story is neocon propaganda, as is everything else in the New York Times. He thinks the Arab Spring was a CIA plot. He doesn't like globalism. And now Trump is trading in his nationalism for policies much more compatible with mainstream GOP
globalism , he feels that the transformative administration he voted for is "effectively over".

The way he explains this to himself is to guess that Trump has been "rolled" by congressional republicans. He has a ways to go, I guess, before he can let in the obvious fact that Trump never did give one millishit for working people.

A small, economically oppressed town, Smack in the middle of Trump country, located on the Olympic peninsula. People might know it from the "Twilight" series.

There, standing on the main street, were a handful of Tax day protesters against Trump--15 people maybe. This is a town that had a huge "Loggers for Trump" sign on the outskirts of town, and whose members will go on and on about the Spotted Owl ruling destroying logging in the area.

That handful of people showed a "yard of guts", as Stephan King likes to say. They stood in dignity and resistance and they will never know how brightly they shined to me.

Having this guy do what he did yesterday gives me great hope. I left a note on his door this morning for the March next Saturday, who knows I may see him there.
