republicans use the nuclear rule to get him in then that would automatically turn the Senate into
like the house of representatives WITH A 6 YEAR TERM and democrats are creamed. How can that be. It's on the CNN app under the heading "the Senate has one more week to live".We CANT have a filibuster. ITS A TRAP!

(24,259 posts)It seems like the story, not just on CNN, is being framed to make it sound like it would be the Dems fault for using the ability to filibuster but it would be the Republicans fault if they kill the filibuster. They need to consider carefully that they'd be doing so for some time including for themselves when the Senate flips, as it will sooner or later.
If we are always afraid to use a filibuster because the majority might go 'nuclear' why the heck even have it at all? Put a constraint or two on it, for instance make whoever is doing the filibustering actually be there speaking (if I remember correctly they ditched that rule in one or both Houses?), but this nonsense about going nuclear needs to end as well. The minority has a right to be heard too and the filibuster is a way to do that.

The Senate is way past broken now and we fool ourselves if we still believe that congeniality still exists in its old form. The nuclear option has always been there and now is the time to expose the Repubs real intent, if that is what they truly want. They have used the filibuster more in the recent past than any party ever has. If they get rid of it then they slit their own throats and it would be with the belief that they will always be in power.
If we think that is true, then why bother with anything and of course there would be nothing to lose either.
Also, the 6 year term thing is staggered, so Senate majorities possibly shift on 2 year time frames anyway.
Don't let CNN be your guide to figuring this out.

(1,097 posts)If we don't filibuster now, they'll still blow up the filibuster on the next nominee. So we need to force them to blow it all up.

(16,151 posts)Oh, they might get rid of it...so we can't filibuster anyone, anything, ever.
Then the worm turns and the other side is in power and those who were too afraid to ever use this tool have it used against them constantly.
It is sickening. If they blow it up, it isn't there for their side anymore either.

(68,825 posts)Claire McCaskill is now filibustering. I consider that a good sign. If it doesn't happen, will not be really angry...I hate the filibuster and it is going to have to go. But the reality is they use the nuclear option and get him confirmed. We won't win this one. I hate arcane senate rules, but this is a lose lose anyway. That being said, I am in favor of them taking a stand and telling orange boy to go 'f' himself.
