It really is an overwhelming smell, and doesn't dissipate rapidly. Nostradammit Jul 2012 #4

We couldn't convince my mother-in-law to leave on Tuesday night so we stayed up all night listening to the fire scanner, hearing all the street names near her house. Harrowing.

My brother-in-law finally got her out of there the next morning. She can be very stubborn, I'm afraid.

That just burn, the smell. It's so gagging. We had a series of fires burning in GA and FL a few yrs ago and the winds literally picked up the smell, the soot, the ash and carried it for miles. At one point, in Tampa, it was "raining ash"... Big flaky ash pieces. The air was stifling... Hard to breathe.

Thankfully they didn't have to leave, although the fire was less than 2 miles from his home.

He couldn't go outside all week because the air was so toxic.

They opened their home to others who had to evacuate, as did many others. It's good to see people opening their hearts and their doors in a time of crisis.
