(94,489 posts)...this is why the Republicans can repeal it without any actual pain being felt.

(34,135 posts)We've got to fight to make sure people who rely on the ACA for coverage are not left where they were before it passed. Some will be in worse shape than before - one couple I know had been on Medicaid but were kicked off because Gov. Rick Scott refused to accept the Medicaid provisions under ACA. Fortunately they were able to get coverage under the ACA but it takes a bite out of their $1800 a month SS diability coverage.
Without the ACA they are uninsurable and without the subsidies they cannot afford private insurance. Although they both worked all their lives now in their early 60s they are unable to work any longer and have nothing to live on other than their disability and future Social Security.
I worry about what will happen to them. He has congenital heart problems and his pancreas was seriously damaged in an auto accident so he is diabetic. She's had two strokes and had a pacemaker put in this past year. They have no assets at all so they are at the mercy of the Republicans.

(146,284 posts)Panic, however, is not in order at this time. At least not when it comes to Medicare.

(34,661 posts)With the Rules changes in the House and Senate,we will see prepackaged repeals coming right and left. You and I have seen attempts like this before with GOP dominated State Legislature.

(7,627 posts)It takes congress to do that. As far as I know, the senate did not repeal the filibuster at the start of the new congress (which is when they can do it with a simple majority vote). Hence, the democrats can easily filibuster anything outrageous like killing medicare. I also think there are plenty of republicans who also wont vote for that since their constituents would not accept it.
I would not rule out significant cuts to it further down the road however.

(4,483 posts)would risk enraging such a huge bloc of voters (and we old folks *do* vote) and their families who would then have to take care of the sick old people. I predict no substantive change to Medicare until the Baby Boomers die out. There is strength in our numbers.

(4,483 posts)depend on Medicare for health insurance, and if he tries to cut disability benefits from Medicare we'll be there with you. We won't let this fucker get away with hurting us and ours. My daughter's benefits come from my husband's account, so his Medicare would have to be cut for anything to happen to hers. Is your Medicare based on your work history? My daughter has never been able to have a job.
Doreen
(11,686 posts)that I did work before becoming disabled. I never had a fancy job. I worked minimum wage jobs with no benefits before I became disabled. I have disabled friends who never worked before and they get their medical for free all the way around I however pay for it in one way or another. My Medicare has also been effected by ACA and if not for the ACA there are things I would not have been able to do.
