Map of the former United States

I posted this a few years ago as a lark, but now I think it is inevitable.

Notes:
1) I had trouble deciding if Mountainland and Midland should be one nation or two. I decided on two because I thought Colorado and Nebraska wouldn’t get along.

2) Hispanica may or may not decide to become part of Mexico.

3) Regarding Alaska; Russia invades Alaska after the collapse of the United States government. Canada counterattacks with the support of England, other Commonwealth nations, and whatever remains of NATO. After a few weeks of fighting, Russia and England come very close to a nuclear war. The United Nations then negotiates a partition similar to that of North and South Korea. The result is what is shown on the map.

4) All the scientists at Duke University, UNC, Rice, Vanderbilt, etc. are banished from New Christendom. They seek refuge in my country of South Florida. As a result the Republic of South Florida becomes the world’s leading center of scientific research.

Washington and Oregon will be the founding provinces of the Republic of Cascadia. We will have close ties to the Republic of California.

and with South Florida being so tiny, common cause might be made with Cuba, to everyone's advantage.

The Great Lakes region, New England and the blue block of states south of NY.

Entry into the Canadian confederation would be a big plus over full out independence.

11. The US is anomalously large, both by area and by population - it is ripe for breakup

Only Russia and Canada are larger by area. But both are relatively empty given the sparsely populated Siberia and northern Canada.

Only China and India are larger by population. But China is dominated by an ethnically homogeneous Han population with centuries of uniform culture behind it. India is highly diverse, but relatively more decentralized with New Delhi not having much control over the affairs of the many ethno-linguistic populations.

In 1900, most of the world was controlled by the British, French, German, Russian, Ottoman, Chinese and Japanese empires. The largest number of independent countries were in Latin America, but they were sheltered under the "protection" of the US and the Monroe doctrine.

The twentieth century was one of imperial disintegration with the breakup of large multi-ethnic empires.

It ls probable that the US will break up in the future.

12. Eastern and Northern Virginia would be part of Metropolia

I think the mountainous region of Western Virginia will break off and become part of WV, thereby New Christendom. Pennsylvania would break off into East Pennsylvania, part of Metropolia, and West Pennsylvania, part of the Federation of Northern States.
