and this amazing, optimistic, spirit-lifting, beautiful, diverse convention.
I really do.
I am not sure when it became the norm that in order to be considered a principled progressive one must always be in a state of cynicism and perpetual despondency, but i reject that brand of progressivism. I believe in grit and doing the most good and the least harm, and to me Hillary Clinton represents that.
I am so proud and happy to be part of the movement that gets our first highly qualified, competent, and incredibly empathetic female nominee.
And yes, it does matter that she is female. Allies are great, and both Bill and Obama have been great allies to women. However, actual representation will always matter, in terms of what policies get prioritized and what gets ignored.
I am so proud and excited to vote for her again.
PS: although, I will miss Obama sorely. He has been an amazing president.

(26,259 posts)A bunch of us retirees from work meet every month, and last month I got an earful about how gawd awful the candidates for both parties are, and how they will either refrain from voting, or vote 3rd party. Touchy situation because I don't want to say anything that will put a big whammy on this get together. I reel in what I would normally say, by about 80%, but always reiterate that their plan is just a passive way of giving votes to Trump.
I'm kind of hoping that politics isn't raised, today.

(24,559 posts)I also think it means more to those of us in Hillary's generation. We had the dreams and ambitions, but were told we were only going to college to catch a good husband; that if we "had" to work, we could only be secretaries, nurses or teachers*; who were denied starting opportunities because "we would have babies and quit"; who were passed over for promotions time and time again while less qualified males moved ahead.
*I mean absolutely no offense to those who chose those very important careers, but only to stress that we wanted additional choices.

(81,210 posts)Only this week has it started to come up, and frequently now, about just how historic this is.
For me, it's been pretty much EVERYTHING. Throughout the campaign. It's been EVERYTHING to me. Well, along with the many other reasons why I have loved, admired, and supported Hillary Clinton ever since I first learned about her in 1992. For me, she's been a shining star and an inspiration for about a quarter-century.

(2,067 posts)I don't want Ann Coulter as President.
I don't want Dana Perino as President.
I don't want Elizabeth Dole as President.
I don't want Melania Trump as President.
I don't want Nikki Haley as President.
None of these people are going to bring progressive ideals for females simply because they are female. I want a PROGRESSIVE PERSON as President, and if that Progressive happens to have a vagina (or identifies as female, either works for me), then so be it.
Are we literally going to be forever using lines like "only the second woman to hold this position" or "only the 10th African-American to accomplish this feat," or will we someday just recognize these folks as people, not a color or a gender?
The more we obsess about race and gender and lose our minds whenever a female or person of color accomplishes something (which is insulting, frankly, at least to this person of color), the more the world will obsess about race and gender.

This is the first. Your need to dismiss it & accuse people who are damn well excited and proud of it of being "obsessed" is dumb.

(2,067 posts)I wasn't proud President Obama was elected because he had the same color skin as me; I was proud he was elected because he was a great candidate and has been a great President.
I wasn't proud that Gabby Douglas won the Olympic gold medal because she has the same skin color as me; I'm proud she won because she represented the United States of America.
I guess heritage/demographics are just more important to some people than others. And it's a little insulting for so many on DU to insinuate that as an African-American I'm required to be "excited" anytime a person of color accomplishes anything. Not every person of color sits all day and thinks about their skin color (at least this one doesn't).

(34,582 posts)who felt a whole lot of pride when I walked in to vote in 2008. My vote for Obama didn't affect the outcome (live in Texas), but the fact that I had the chance to vote for a black man for president made me (at least for a while) proud of my country. I didn't think it would happen in my lifetime. Maybe I'm just strange.

the DNC should have stayed neutral, but she did not control the DNC. She won because Democrats liked her more to the tune of 4 million votes.

(2,004 posts)HRC ran a great campaign and refrained from trashing BS throughout the campaign even though BS was not a Democratic candidate and has already stated he is now an independent, again. Of course, the BS supporters were upset when the truth was pointed out about the BS talking points. As Harry Truman said, "I never give them hell. I just tell the truth and they think it's hell.. That is true for the BS rabid supporters as well as the GOP.
The very thing that disproves the complaints about the HRC campaign is that BS won a lot of the caucuses, but HRC won easily due to the primaries where people actually got to vote in a real voting booth. Caucauses are just too easily manipulated by a few people.
There will be constant vicious attacks on the Democratic ticket this year, from the top of the ticket down to local races. The only way the Good Old Putin party can win is to push lies about the Democratic Party candidates, and suppress voting by discouraging people from voting with "legal" barriers and convincing regular people their votes won't matter. The trashing of Democratic Party candidates with the lies about being corporate shills and being neocons are really right wing tactics to drive down voter turnout.
To quote President Obama. "Don't Boo, Vote!"
Thank you for you thoughtful response to whatever that nasty post was.

(12,863 posts)I've learned not to get too caught up in professionally crafted political events, but I am very pleased with the content and delivery of the speeches. They said what needed to be said, not only in showing Trump for the unqualified demagogue that he is but also in making the case that Hillary Clinton has devoted her entire adult life to making positive change.
What a contrast withy the RNC!

(24,324 posts)Different people have different interests and priorities.
For example, while I do have an interest in politics, and am very glad that the Democratic Party is about to nominate the first woman by a major party for president,(it's about time!) I also have other interests that are, in fact, more important to me.
For example, I am returning from Tokyo after hearing a stunning concert, and was fortunate and honored to have a late dinner with one of the world's great conductors and one of the world's great violinists.
I was in Seoul in April to hear the same violinist and also a concert by a great pianist, and the Seoul Philharmonic as well, in which I have several friends.
I have played all of the Mahler symphonies, but one,. etc etc...Not important to most, but this is where I can make my biggest contribution to the world, and what brings me the greatest joy in return.
I will be sailing in the Lofoton Islands in Northern Norway in a couple weeks on a 37' boat with 5 other people..... never even been on a sail boat before. !! :>
So, I am plenty excited about a lot of things. Don't worry about me.. Please DO enjoy the moment that IS so very important you. You deserve it.
Oh....
I do not agree that it is "....the norm that in order to be considered a principled progressive one must always be in a state of cynicism and perpetual despondency, ..."
I sure am not like that. And I do not know that any of my progressive friends feel that way.
Enjoy the moment..

(7,581 posts)Let's look at one statistic -just one.
1/4 of Ameircan kids live in poverty. How is that possible? Did he ever mention it? Did any Dems mention that this week? Where are those concerned about this? Are you concerned? I am. This makes me sick, that in the "greatest" country in the world, we have 1/4 of American kids living in poverty. And no one is talking about it. Just chanting, "USA, USA!!!"
It's disgusting.
