Question : intelligence info

The president releases intelligence briefings to the candidates. Is that just a tradition? Can Obama just decide not to do it? Would he need to consult congress?

I realize he would have to treat both candidates the same, but that is preferable to giving
Trump any intelligence information.

but give trump verrrrry little information of consequence.

he could probably get away with giving hillary a more proper briefing but honestly she doesn't need it. she already knows plenty from her secretary of state days and could easily catch up after she wins in november.

and count on it being sold to foreign powers. Contemporaneously secretly document what is being done and why so as to later prove the plan.

might be a law or something. I've never looked into it. Til now, no candidate has been quite this much of a loose cannon.

as to what, how much, and the classification level of the stuff he gives out.

IMHO they should be limited. She doesn't need it (can catch up between Nov - Jan) and he's just to dangerous.

It started with Truman and has continued ever since. The actual briefings are conducted by the CIA. Technically since it is an executive action unbacked by any legislative requirement Obama "could" stop it just as directly as Truman started it. However he shouldn't. They do serve an important purpose and if Obama cuts off access it would immediately become a huge partisan issue with all kinds of spin and congressional "investigations" and ultimately would probably be used against Democratic candidates in future election cycles.
