First, JFK had real political, military and social experiences. These provided substance.

Second, although the Kennedy family was prominent in JFK's life, their roles were limited. The campaign used heavy-weight politicians, intellectuals and professionals to speak for the candidate.

Third, obviously it was another time and the media existed in a reality-based world.

Oh, and fourth, Donald Trump is an idiot.
